Re: Crafty Momma Check-In

  • I need a craft fix, too!

Update: I've failed at 90% of my crafts for this Christmas due to lower back pain. I managed to pull it together and finish the felt ornaments I've been making for my side of the family last night and even found tiny gift bags to put them in. All other crafts, including my bow tie onesie for baby nephew have been outsourced to Etsy this year.

Well at least you're supporting little handmade Etsy businesses! Pics of the felt ornaments? I have been wanting to try my hand at felt plushies ever since someone posted the most adorable felt mobiles from Etsy on the board months ago.. But fabric crafts intimidate me and I don't spend enough time in paint and clay as it is. I put that mobile on my Babylist registry though, so hopefully I won't have to try to make it!
  • I'll post one when I get home! I basically used my cookie cutters to cut out tree, snowman, gingerbread man and stocking designs and embellished with seed beads and sequins on one side and embroidered their names on the other. I also made some in 2011 for DH's family for Christmas after having met them once lol!

It started as practice for tackling a felt stocking design for my BIL that looked exactly like our family stockings (made in 1961, 1983, 1985 and 1986). My great aunt died a few years ago and no one carried on the tradition, so I thought I'd learn how. The one I made two years ago for BIL turned out great, and I had delusions of making stockings for my new husband and my twin niece and nephew since they all joined the family this year--but it will have to wait. And now I'll need to make one for our baby, too. It's going to be a busy 2014 ;)
  • Well you already saw the minion I finished for snmetz7...I'm currently working on crocheting a basketweave stitch scarf out of thick soft plushy black yarn, adorned with crocheted sugar skulls on the ends, for an old friend of mine. I'll definitely post a pic on here when it's finished.... Probably sometime today or tomorrow.

  • today is the LAST day i am working on christmas orders!!  wahoo!!  starting this weekend, i am taking a break from the biz and making stuff i want to make.

first up:  a superhero outfit for kiddo for christmas.  poor guy doesn't even have a full set of his own yet (you know what they say about the cobbler's children having no shoes....) and i will certainly post pics of the finished product when it's done.

next up, which will probably happen after christmas, unfortunately...  a fabric play teepee.  i have the fabric already, and i just need to find a good pattern and a week's worth of time.
  • It's nothing fancy but here is the advent calendar I made for my 2 year old! Every day he gets an ornament to put on it. He LOVES it! Not sure why it came out sideways!

  • I made the dress my daughter' sweating in this picture. Excuse the terrible hair-do please.
  • I was attempting to make my grandma some picture coasters for Christmas, like these:

BUT it turns out, 4x4 (or any size) ceramic tile doesn't actually exist in this world. I've been to Hobby Lobby, Michael's, Home Depot, Lowe's, Target, and Walmart. None. Any ideas??
go to a legit flooring store/warehouse.  they should have it!!
  • @kendracoleslaw homedepot online has them and you can do local pickup.
@mamafantastic hubs saw one of those teepees in pottery barn mag and was like "if we only had $300"  I told him he could make it himself for around $50 and it was like a light bulb went off and he wants to DIY everything now lol

  • try this??

    https://www.amazon.com/Mexican-Tile-White-Talavera-Tiles/dp/B0030GZDXA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387398153&sr=8-1&keywords=4x4+ceramic+tile

you get 9 tiles, but shipping is more than the item itself - $19 total for everything.  might be worth it, though, if you're willing to receive it after christmas.  you're right - it's very hard to find!  this was the only thing i could come up with on amazon.
  • I posted this late last week and didn't get any suggestions so I'll try again. I'm half way done with two matching mobiles. I need to either add beads or something to the ends of the ribbons or just add a bunch more ribbon in the middle. What do you ladies think? I want it to be more fun for the babies to look at.

here's the thing that immediately jumped out to me about this VERY cute mobile:  the babies won't really be able to see the items hanging down!  the shapes are vertical and they almost need to be hung diagonally so you can appreciate the shapes from the front AND from beneath.  as it is right now, the shapes will just look like little slivers to them,

i'm made an entirely new second mobile that just uses whimsical crafty items hanging down from another horizontal loop.  try feathers, scraps of fabric, ribbon, beads, even fake butterflies.  the lighter the weight of your materials, the more easily the pieces will sway in the wind when you walk in and out of the nursery.  i can't think of any good option to add to your existing mobile that wouldn't seem out of place other than maybe plain skinny green ribbon to look like grass or weeds for the safari animals.
  • @mamaFantastic That's exactly what I was thinking.  I took so much time hand painting those things and put it together and immediately became disenchanted with the project.  I think a big thing of feathers, scraps of fabric, ribbon, beads in the middle with some shinny objects would be good.  Thanks for the idea!

Paint your own pottery places have tons of them. And since they aren't already glazed, the ceramic is super porous and will probably have really good adhesion. They usually have tons of different sizes.
  • Got my sewing machine running... now to find energy to put some stuff together.

Thanks!   Here's a slightly better pic of those pants.

  • We've had people offer to make or get stuff for our little girl, which I'm cool with.  However, I told my husband that I want to make the blanket that we bring her home in.  So I looked at a bunch of crochet patterns and narrowed it down to 2.  However, I couldn't decide which one I liked better (one looked cool, but was kind of easy, one looked like a more common baby blanket, but was a little more difficult, so I really want to try the pattern).

Long story short, I went out and bought the yarn to make BOTH and that is going to be my Christmas gift from my husband!  (Now I just have to find my darn crochet hooks!)  I'll try to post some pictures once the blankets are done.

  • Heading down to the studio to work on some Christmas presents for folks.. Unfortunately they are still gonna be late. But at least the handmade nature of them will hopefully make that ok!
