This. But, if I think about it a bit more,  I guess there's a slight difference  between the Gwen and Gwyn in Gwendolyn (short e) and Gwyneth (short i).

  • Agreeing with PPs, it's the difference between pin and pen (short i and short e). Which for some people/accents is really different and for others it barely perceptible or imperceptible.

    This.

I would pronounce them differently---pen vs pin, when vs win, but most people where I'm from say pen as pin, when as win.  For them, Gwen and Gwyn would practically be the same.

  • Ok hmm. I think I prefer Gwen as on when but thought it rhymes with win. We live in New England so I guess it'd be safe to assume must would pronounce it like when?

there are regional differences in how people pronounce short e and short i. in California it is really common for most short /e/ to be pronounced like pin. so the names Wendy and Gwen are pronounced Windy and Gwin. In the midwest and northeast there is most likely a difference. It is the pen/pin debate in speech language pathology.

the locations are general. of course people from those places could pronounce differently, but overall that is regionally how people say the e/i
    WHAT?!?
Are you from, or do you currently live in California? I have never been in a region of CA that pronounces the short e like the i in pin.
