Low temps?

My BBT thermometer came in yesterday, so I used it this morning. I got 97.77. I tried it again to be sure, and it stayed the same. Tonight I tried it just for the sake of trying it out, and it was still below 98. I had DH try it, and he had a normal 98+ temp. Has anyone else experienced having low BBT temps? Isn't it normal to be more like 98.4?

Re: Low temps?

  • I wouldn't worry about it. If you check out FF charts, plenty of women have "lower" temps. I would just temp as usual and you might find that is normal for you.

  • Even on a regular thermometer not first thing in the morning my temp is rarely 98.6+. 98.4 is the highest BBT I've ever had. My pre-O temps are usually low 97 and post-O is usually high 97. Some people are much lower.

  • I pretty consistently wake up at 96.8-97.3. No biggie!

  • Ok thanks everyone! Whenever I would go to the doctors I would always be at least 98. So I just didn't understand why my readings were so low now. When I temped this morning, I got 97.0
  • Yeah, standard science that you memorize is humans are 98.6F....but I run normal at 96.3-96.5....and feel feverish above 98.2. People vary in temps as they do in everything else. Also, at the Dr. it's the middle of the day, you have been running around doing things for hours...you BBT, early in the morning, SHOULD be lower than that b/c you've been lying there like a blob for hours. hope that helps!

There's a difference between basal body temp and active temp.  Basal body is the lowest temperature your body reaches.  You can only achieve that through absolute rest (ie. sleep for at least three hours!)  Once you wake up and move around, your temp will go up a bit.  That's why you can't track your cycle with anything else.  Progesterone causes your basal body to temp to rise.

98.6 degrees F is what humans are said to be internally.  That's an average - some are lower, some are higher.  This number also assumes the body is not at complete rest.

Yep that makes perfect sense! I guess I just thought that 98.4 would be the base, and when I ovulated, my temp would go to up 98.8 or something. But now I get it! Thanks everyone!
