well-visit when sick

DS has his 18 month check up tomorrow, but he's had diarrhea all day long.   Is it a problem to go to a regular check up when you're sick?

Re: well-visit when sick

  • Does he have a fever? If he has any shots, planned, they'll probably have you come back when he's feeling better.

  • We don't have a co-pay for well visits, but if DS is sick that visit, we will get a bill in the mail =/  They usually still want to see him even if he's sick.
  • They will still do the visit but any shots will have to be rescheduled.

  • I always take LO. I figure at least the pedi will have a chance to check her out and make sure it is not serious. If shots are planned our pedi just has us come back and a NP administer them.
  • We had this experience with my son's 9 month check up. He had a really bad cold at his well visit but no fever so he still had his shots but they also treated him for his cold with a nebulizer treatment at the doctor's office. We didn't pay a copay at the doctor's office but the insurance billed us for a copay later.

Wait, what? If you are scheduled for a well visit and your kid happens to be sick for it they bill you for a sick visit? That's ridiculous and I would not pay it.

It is normal to have shots delayed if they are sick.

Well visits should be covered completely (isn't that part of ACA?) and most places have no co pay shot visits, at least in my experience. I'm sure it depends on your office and insurance.

Long story short - yes, I'd still go unless they were like in bed w/ the real flu.
My pedi has this too.  Their policy is that if your child has an issue that takes time to resolve that goes beyond the regularly scheduled well visit they can bill you for both a sick visit and a well visit.  So if your child happens to have an ear infection they can charge you for writing that prescription.

One of our doctors in our practice charged us for writing a prescription for hydrocortisone at DSs 6 mo well check.  I threw a shit fit but that's their policy.  None of the other doctors have ever done that for us and my DS always needs something when we are there.

Wow.  My DD's ped has never once coded a visit that way.  She has been sick twice at her well baby check ups.
