How much spit up is normal?

My son has GERD and a milk protein allergy. He is on similac alimentum. We go every week to two weeks to his GI dr changing his meds bc nothing has helped his GERD yet. He was switched to omeprazole this morning. Sometimes when he eats he barely spits up and sometimes he will soak me and him both! It's never projectile just a lot of spit up. But like I said it's not like that every time he eats. Probably half the time. Is this normal?

DS was spitting up; some (up to 10x daily, small to medium) not a lot. Pedi mentioned that if it were a lot I could feed him more often for less time. What do you know, a few days later DS starting spitting up a lot (near 20x daily, small to large) ... and unhappily. I tried burping him better and holding him more upright. On his own accord (yesterday) he started eating more often for less time and he has hardly spit up at all today. Although DH elicited a good burp this morning and pulled DS back to save his work clothes and DS' spit up splattered all over a baby blanket on the floor - score! Wishing that your LO is feeling better soon.

  • The reflux meds won't necessarily work to curb the spit up.  The PPI will decrease the amount of stomach acid (and hopefully, minimize the amount of spit up), but spit up is inevitable as newborns' stomach sphincters are immature and spill the contents of their stomachs.

You could try as PP suggested and feed LO less volume more frequently.  Is LO being kept upright for 30 minutes after a feeding?

I'm sorry that you're going through this.  The omeprazole should start to help soon, and then at least it's primarily just spit up, so you're minimizing the chance that stomach acid does damage to LO's esophagus.

  • Like PP said, spit up still happens with reflux meds like Prevacid. They decrease the amount of stomach acid so it won't hurt as much coming up, but it can still come up.
