Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby Led Weaning

DS is 6m and has tried a variety of purees and mashes (we started a few weeks early of exactly 6m) and I feel like he could be ready to try some small cut up pieces but the thought makes me nervous of choking. Any recommendations on what foods would be good to try and how can I be sure they are small enough? Or is it too early still? He is grabbing everything off my plate and trying to shove it in his mouth so he gets the idea but I feel unsure about how to go about giving him something on his tray to try.

Thanks!

Re: Baby Led Weaning

  • For very first BLW foods We started with zucchini sticks (steamed until soft), ripe avocado, and sweet potato (bake a whole potato for 45-60 min at 425, let it cool, then cut into thick sticks). LO loved it. We did big sticks like the size of steak fries- to start LO did not have the coordination or chewing ability to handle small pieces. So she'd just gum the big piece until she got off a piece she could handle. IMO small pieces are more of a choking hazard when you're just getting started. And at 6 months a baby does not have a pincer grasp so they can't pick up small piece. At that skill level they can only grab something in their fist but they don't know how to open their fist to get it out, that's why you do stick shapes so they can gnaw on the part that protrudes from their fist. Oh and also broccoli was a starter staple - a good sized floret, with 2" of stalk for her to grip, and then she'd just chew off the top. They are going to gag, it's part of learning how to handle food in their mouth and will happen a lot. Choking May happen now and then but should be rare - you have to keep a watchful eye on the size of pieces they break off. Good luck and happy eating!

  • Thank you! That's helpful!!  He grabbed a french fry off my plate at a restaurant and shoved it in his mouth so I was already thinking about sweet potato fries.

For avacado.... perhaps a slice of one that's not too ripe so it doesn't mush in his hand? He's eating avacado mush and loves it!

    Thanks again :)
