Emergen-C?

I seem to be coming down with a cold and I want to drink emergen-c. Anyone know if it is safe? I called my dr this morning but she is in meetings all day so I won't get a response until tomorrow. I tried researching too but nothing ever said yes or no. Some said safe and some said it's too many vitamins... Argh!

Re: Emergen-C?

  • Funny, I was just wondering this same thing.

  • I can't imagine it's too many vitamins, with Vitamin C you just pee out any your body doesn't absorb. I've been guzzling it and LO's been performing wonderfully at every appt, so can't be too bad.

  • If I'm not mistaken emergen-c says for pregnant women should not take it on the package

  • I couldn't find anywhere about pregnant women taking it so I thought "ok it's safe" but then it said not approved by FDA so basically they have no clue if it's ok. Thanks for all of your input ladies.
  • My OB also said no. She said Zinc was ok. Also, no on echinacea.
  • Oh shoot, I've been taking it like crazy these past few weeks-like one a day...I just ran out, looks like I won't be re-stocking! Thankfully all is fine with LO...

  • Haha I totally took it to when I was sick recently didn't even occur to me to ask my dr.
  • everything I've read said it's too many vitamins. I live on Emergen-C when I'm sick...so super bummed I can't drink it as I'm trying to get over a 2 week cold.
  • My doc said it was fine now that I'm further along in the pregnancy. She did also say no more than one a day and only if I feel like I might be getting sick, not to take it everyday. So I've had it a few times in the last few weeks and I'm not worried about taking it as needed to help prevent a cold. I haven't caught anything going around my workplace, so far anyway ;)
  • My OB said no to mega doses like emergen-c. Instead I take a daily vitamin d supplement (1,000 iu) and a daily vitamin c supplement (240mg). Knock on wood, I haven't caught any colds from my students yet and I normally get at least one every fall. If you feel like you are coming down with something, chicken soup and hot tea are usually also helpful! Feel better!

I would say see what your doc has to say.

I only took Emergen-C once in my life when I felt like I was coming down with a cold right before a vacation. Good news: I didn't get a cold. Bad news: I ended up with vomiting and diarrhea instead for about a day. >.< Not sure if it was related to overdoing the vitamin C, or the fact I noticed later that it is sweetened with aspartame, and maybe I had a bad reaction to the artificial sweetener (since I usually avoid them). Chances are what happened to me wouldn't happen to you (particularly if you've used it before), but I also wanted to give you a heads-up on the artificial sweetener since some folks like to avoid that during pregnancy.

Personally, I've been trying to do the best I can to avoid getting sick with washing hands frequently (or using sanitizer), not touching mouth/eyes/nose, humidifier in bedroom, drinking OJ and decaf tea with honey and lemon, and trying my best to avoid people who seem sick (even if they say "it's just allergies").

  • I was also told only vitamin C by OB and pharmacist. I just take one everyday once fall hits and it actually does help.

  • My doctor said it was okay.  I only took it once a day, and the kind I took was just Vit C.  I know some of the flavors have other vitamins in them, and those may be too much. I do know that Vit C gets flushed out, but too much Vit A can cause problems.
  • i also asked my OB and they said no. Too many vitamins with the prenatal.
