Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

vitamins

What vitamins, if any, does your toddler take?  I try to give my LO a balanced diet and I've read that kids can overdose on certain vitamins, like iron (which I feel he gets a lot of from his food - from cereals and meat).  Thoughts?

Re: vitamins

  • i asked our pedi about this like 3 times (at their 9 month, 12 month and 18 month appts) and each time he assured me that they didn't need vitamins or any other kind of supplement.  they usually get what they need through what they eat, even considering they are picky eaters.

  • None. And I don't take them either. Vitamin supplements are, at best, a waste of money IMO.

  • Our pedi has always recommended a vitamin drops.  So we give DS a vitamin with added fluoride. It's a prescription but it's completely covered by our insurance so we don't pay anything for it.
  • I restarted DS on vitamin d drops after summer. He still bf some so he only drinks 8oz WCM a day. We live in northern climate so he is not getting any sun right now.

  • Our ped recommended vitamin D supplement drops right from birth.  I asked at the last well visit how long we should continue, and the doctor we saw that day (there are several in the practice, and this was the only time we've ever had this dude) said "forever"... the explanation being that we spend less time outdoors these days and even as adults we tend to be deficient in vitamin D.  So my husband still gives them to him once a day mixed in with milk, but I really don't think it's necessary.  We're not an inside family.  Even in the winter our kiddo gets a good dose of sunshine.  With fewer daylight hours, and in colder climates, vitamin D supplements might be something to ask your ped about if you're concerned.
  • DD takes poly vi sol drops. She is extremely picky eater so I put them in her milk each morning.

  • Our pedi wanted him on vitamins so we put in some liquid multivitamins into his bottle before bed and we use ones without extra iron.

  • My girls get Vit D, probiotics and occasionally elderberry syrup.  My pedi who is an integrative pediatrician so very into natural medicine etc recommends the vit d from birth for breastfed babies.  My girls dont drink cows milk so I as long as I am BF I will continue to give it to them.
