Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

12 month's old and rash

I was just curious and hoping to get some input on my daughter's rash.

Her rash started as a gooseflesh looking rash on her back, almost pimply looking.  Within a few days, it transformed into an exzema looking rash, that has now spread to an exzema looking rash on her booty and splotches on her legs.  Now, 2 weeks later, she is starting to have the gooseflesh looking rash all over her tummy too.

The doctor has looked at it twice, first time said it was "rash of unknown origin,"  and this last time, said she thought it looked like exzema and to treat it by minimizing bath time and lotioning her up with Eucerin.

I am wondering if it could be allergy related.  I did wean her from being fed exclusively BM to WCW around the time of the rash.  While she hadnt really had WCM before that time, she has had WCM yogurt every other day for 6 months, cheese. etc.  The only other thing that has changed is the weather - we live in CO and had a bout of very very cold weather.

Any thoughts?  I just dont know what to think since the rash has not gotten any better.

  • What would you give instead?  Soy? Almond? Goat?  Thanks in advance!

As an aside, the doctor said it did not look allergenic, but I cant help but think it is related.

  • maybe this suggestion is lame...but could it be dry skin?  my dd's eczema flares up when the weather gets cold and her skin gets really dry.  it starts off as goose bumpy things and then turns into reddish splotches.  it gets better when i lather her up with lotion.

This is what I'm thinking. DD has eczema and it seems to only happen when it's cold. I've been bathing without soap, using aquaphor on the red areas, and eczema lotion all over. I also make sure none of her skin touches the air outside if it's especially cold or windy. There are a lot of good web sites with info on toddler eczema.
Of course it wouldn't hurt to cut the milk, milk has proteins not found in other dairy items. Any of the alternative options you listed would work.

  • Have you tried hydrocortisone cream? When my LO had some ezcema/dry skin, that helped. If that doesn't help, I would see a dermatologist--we just did that for a rash LO had that turned out to be something a bit more serious than dry skin.

I second hydrocortisone.  Does your DD seem really itchy because this helps a lot with that.  DS has eczema and we do a combo of aquaphor and prescription strength cortisone.  It could be allergy related or it could be related to the weather.  I know for us it's gotten much worse in the past 6 weeks.

Our GI dr said eczema is usually caused by food allergies but that it's not really necessary to cut the food out of their diet.  But you could try talking to an allergist if the other things don't help.  Good luck.
  • My son gets eczema due to WCM, but can eat yogurt and cheese just fine. It's funny because we did 2oz WCM 3x a day mixed with formula and he did great. As soon as we totalled 10oz of WCM per day mixed with formula the eczema started. I stop and 2 days later his skin is all clear. I went back to formula full time and then tried WCM again with the same issue. Now we are on Coconut milk being mixed with formula. We're about to swap to full Coconut milk soon and finally drop formula THANK GOODNESS since Coconut is working out well with my son.

We're going to try WCM again in a few months, but i've read they don't really "need" it as long as they are getting nutrients from other sources.

  • We had an appointment with a dermatologist earlier this week for the exact same thing. Atopic dermatitis was the diagnosis. Basically we switch to cetaphil soap and lotion for him and we got rx strength hydrocortisone to apply to the rash. That all happened on Monday. Today the rash is almost completely gone!  We use aquaphor and california baby diaper cream as well. So far this is the only thing that has helped out of 3 different brands of diapers, cloth diapers, 4 kinds of wipes, who knows how many kinds of soap, and about 10 different kinds of butt paste. I hope you find what works for your LO!
