Ugh just realized I've been using Salicylic Acid

So in the shower I was reading my face wash just for the hell of it and saw it contains 2% Salicylic Acid. I immediately freaked out. It is a grapefruit wash I never thought it would contain it. I'm 17 weeks and used it very early in 1st tri but then ran out until about 14 weeks. I'm going to call the doc in the am but I'm nervous. Anyone else use it? Any of your OBs say it was ok? I leave it on my face for like 10 seconds. My AS is a week from today and now this week is going to go by 10 times slower.

Re: Ugh just realized I've been using Salicylic Acid

  • I'm pretty sure I used it all preg. with DD and she's a healthy litttle kid.

  • I'm sure you and baby are ok. Try to use an all natural from now on, if you are trying to go all natural.
  • I wouldn't worry about it. I've had constant breakouts with this pregnancy and I still use my Clean & Clear astringent for them, which also contains salicylic acid. I don't use it every day, though, and not all over my face like I used to. Just when I notice the breakout getting particularly bad and only where the pimples are.

Either way, I'm sure you're ok. You are most likely not using it in quantities that are going to do harm.

  • I used it with DS who is healthy and brilliant! Using it still with this pregnancy.

    It will be okay.

  • I've used it throughout my pregnancies and my girls are fine.

  • I wouldn't worry. I use Proactiv, which according to some is going to cause L to come out with 8 arms. My OB never gave me any restrictions on face wash.

I just switched back to Proactiv+ from Philosophy because it wasn't helping my breakouts, unfortunately the Proactiv isn't helping either! Ugh!

  • I use a neotrogena grapefruit acne wash that had 2 percent SA. I asked my doc with my last child and again this time and she said it's no problem. I have continued to use it.

  • If it worries you that much switch to witch hazel astringent. Smells like ass but works fairly well.

I use Clean&Clear. This is my 2nd pregnancy, I've never been warned of the dangers of facial cleansers..

  • My OB had approved any of the typical facial cleansers/astringents. Salicilycic acid, benzoyl peroxide.... I've been using salicylate acid the entire time.

  • I was using it until my daughter came in at Thanksgiving... She used the baby to clean me out of all my face washes... Shopping throughout the house in fact .... And telling me how bad it was for the baby and putting it in her bag to take home ... Lol its the only part of her visits that hurts me ... And that is just in my pocketbook !!

  • Yup, count me in as another CPS reportable mom. I'm knowingly using SA face wash. It's probably the same one as you're using--pink grapefruit scrubing something. Neutrogena maybe? The only studies done on SA are with ingestion of it and the studies SUGGEST that prolonged skin exposure MIGHT have a negative impact on a growing fetus. There is nothing conclusive about face wash that is on your skin for 5-10 seconds. I wouldn't worry about it but at least you know now, right?

  • SA is the only thing that keeps my breakouts somewhat at bay.  I just don't use any serums or leave-on type stuff with it in there.  Facewash only.  Used it with my first, been using it all through this pregnancy, and everything is A-OK.

  • Thanks all. I feel better. I think I was worried because I knew I saw somewhere to try to avoid it but had no idea why. Now that I'm educated I'm not as worried
  • The main worry is over ingested SA, after that, it's the leave on stuff.

  • I use it twice a day, everyday! I even use a face wash with... gasp... benzoyl peroxide on occasion. Not to toot my own horn (toot, toot), but I have (had?) beautiful pre-pregnancy skin. Pregnancy, however, is making me break out like a 13-year old boy. Ain't no Cetaphil or natural, organic sh*t gonna cure what I got going on right now!

Additionally - my derm told me that she used both SA and BP during her pregnancies. She warned me to make my own decision, but she said scientifically, so little product is absorbed systemically when applied topically.

    Use the face wash.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much. I've read doctors who say that you really don't get that much absorbed through your skin to cause any harm.

GNC has a rose witch hazel. I haven't checked the ingredients, so who knows what trouble could be lurking there, but it smells nice!

  • I didn't even know SA was a "problem" until literally last week. I haven't been using it, so whatever, but literally no one EVER mentioned that it was no-no, so it can't be THAT big a deal. :)
  • I using neutrogena naturals scrub and grapefruit was and realized the same thing like a month and a half ago. Now I just use dove soap. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
  • My ob said ok to over the counter products including those with sal acid and benzoyl peroxide
  • I started using the Clarisonic for my pregnancy skin and it has done wonders! There are all kinds of face wash options with it too. I'd suggest adding it to your Christmas list

I second witch hazel I also use tea tree oil face lotion. But were okayed by ob and both worked pretty good. I get some breakouts here and there but nothing terrible that I can't cover up. Works great on cutting down the oil.

  • My OB ok'd me to use it. I had horrible breakouts first trimester and this is what she suggested along w topical clearisil
  • I just use it. the only thing I stay away from is booze, pot, meth, heroine and seafood (damn allergies). most of that stuff online is fear mongering.
Wait, you're supposed to stay away from meth?  Damn it!!!  ;)

OP - you can relax.  I'm sure baby is just fine :)
  • My midwife said any OTC face washes are ok. It is when you get to prescription medications that it becomes an issue (tretinoins, I'm thinking).

  • i mean, aside from like binge drinking and copious amounts of ativan, there's not a whole lot i've actively avoided.  i know as a FTM i should probably be a bit more paranoid about this stuff, but there are far worse things than 2% of SA that you could be slathering all up on your face.
