Toddlers: 24 Months+

Stroller thoughts- too old?

I am really wanting to get a new lightweight stroller. Right now we use a Chicco Cortina that we bought as a travel set with his infant carseat. At 27 months do you think it's a waste or do you still use your stroller with older toddlers and beyond? (He is at his wanting to do everything alone, not necessarily loving hand holding and waiting in lines so my stroller is used a ton when out at the moment) Thanks for your input!

  • i would get a lightweight one becasue even when they are 4/5 they need one at zoo/mall/etc

  • DS is 3 and we still bring the stroller to the mall.  It's handy having somewhere they can sit if they want a drink or snack while you're shopping.
My niece and nephews have all used a stroller for longer trips until they were 5 years old.

  • We walk to a lot of playgrounds, parks, pools etc that are half a mile or more from the house, so we'll be using the stroller for a while yet.

Also just having somewhere to stash all the gear.

We probably used a stroller until our kids were 3.5. Maybe even close to 4. I can't imagine pushing around a 4 or 5 year old. Once our kids hit 4 they wanted to walk by themselves everywhere - the zoo, shopping, etc. And if we were walking to the park they were riding their bike or their scooter.

  • Thanks for all the input! I've had smaller strollers (an umbrella and a smaller Graco one) but I am wanting more of a city mini or b-agile. Thanks again :)

We bought a new stroller when the kiddo was 26 months and we've used it about twice. I don't think we've used a stroller since May or June. He'll be 3 in early February.

ETA: After reading the responses, I see that we are unusual. My kid loves to walk and hates the stroller. We go to the zoo and the mall all the time and he walks all of it. The only thing he can't do is hike more than a couple miles uphill, but I bring my carrier for that if he needs it.

  • We haven't used a stroller for awhile now and DD is 3. She hates sitting in a stroller and would rather walk with us. I'm not saying you shouldn't get a new one though. I think it depends on the child.
  • My oldest (almost 3) still uses a stroller depending on the situation.  If we are going somewhere where there is a lot of walking, we bring it and allow her to switch back and forth between walking and riding.  When they are not riding, they can also help "push" the stroller.

  • Can you possibly borrow a city mini or bagile for a day? The seat is pretty reclined and some kids really don't like that. I have a city micro that I really like, both of my kids will sit in it for brief times. Nowadays I am usually pushing an empty stroller.
  • I used the stroller with DD until DS was born, although certainly by the time she was four she was capable of walking most places on her own.  I expect I'll need to use a stroller with DS for at least another two years.  Even if he doesn't want to ride in the stroller, I walk a lot (we live in a city where it's easier to walk/take public transport than drive most places) and I don't want to wear DS out or go as slow as he goes, plus it's nice to have the stroller basket for hauling small amounts of groceries and stuff.

  • My 2 year old barely ever uses a stroller anymore, and I don't see her going back to it, so I wouldn't buy another.  We still bring it to the aquarium or zoo, and usually it's just a cart to wheel our crap around in.  DD fights getting in it unless she's beyond exhausted.

Like Orangecurls said, the seat in our CityMini is pretty reclined, but we switched the straps from 5 point to 3 point a while ago so that DD could sit up when she's in there.

  • I have a runner. Actually, I have 2 runners now. There is something to be said about strapping them in so you know where they are. Of course, every kid is different, and it's going to depend on your situation and what activities you are doing. Worst case, I find the stroller a good place to haul all my goods even if the kids aren't in it. :)

  • I still put DS1 in the stroller occasionally for long walks or when I need him to stay put while out. I don't think it would be a waste if it helped make things easier for you.

  • I've never used a stroller at all, just baby carriers.  But once the kids were walking they mostly wanted to walk unless we were out for a really long time.  I wouldn't think you'd want to invest in a new one - better for them to walk!
  • My DD walks a lot but there are plenty of times that I need her to sit or she gets tired. There's NO WAY I could not have a stroller.  I walk/jog for exercise so she sits then or if we are somewhere crowded, I need a place for her to be safe and contained.  Not to mention that she gets tired!  We are out a lot and we travel a lot so this is just a no brainer for us.

  • Starting at 25/26 months it was no more stroller for us. They didn't want to be in it much and somewhere like the zoo it was way too hard to have the stroller plus wrangle two kids who wanted to run. I needed the two hands so I couldn't have one hand pushing an empty stroller.
I just bring the carrier for the rare time one wants to be carried a bit.
Very very rarely I will use it if I have to go into a store super fast or something and want them strapped in but if it's just one I just hold them in that case
  • I wouldn't. Mine is 27 months and we have only used a stroller a handful of times since she was 18 months. She's also in the 90th percentile though and wears almost a 4T, and doesn't fit into most strollers now. I hate standing in long lines with her but to me its even worse with a stroller because its yet another thing to have to bring along. We taught her to hold hands by telling her she has to be carried if she doesn't hold hands. She hates being carried and loves to walk. We took her to the zoo twice and sea world once in the last few months, and brought the stroller just in case both times. It ended up being a purse holder. She never sat in it one time.

Depends entirely on the kid and your needs, but it would be a huge waste for my family.

  • We still use a stroller occasionally, and my youngest is 3. If neither of them sit in it, it still is a place to hold my bag, water bottles, etc. Not to mention coats, hats, and gloves for 3 people.

  • We have the Chicco Liteway stroller.  That thing is seriously a life saver.  It even made it to Europe and back.  It's nice to have something light and easy to get in and out of the car.  Although we were rough on it so I don't know if it will make it to the next kid.

  • We RARELY use ours anymore. Grandparents may use it if they take her to the mall, but we never do.

  • I think it just depends on how many times you take your kids out places where longer walking is needed. For me, outside of taking a walk in the neighborhood, I have probably only used the stroller at the zoo and and the mall in the past several months. I think using a stroller is pretty acceptable up until about five.

  • i wouldn't.  We haven't used a stroller since 18 months.  she wants to walk.  All i have stroller wise is a jogging stroller for running.  We didn't even bother bringing her "real" stroller when we moved
