Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Hi / Soy formula question

Hi! Wanted to introduce myself - I mostly spend my time on the Dec 12 board, but sometimes venture out. Our DD is turning one on the 26th, and she's (too quickly) becoming a toddler.

Anyway, since most of you have been through the formula to milk transition, I thought I'd check over here for ideas. We also have our well baby appt next week, but thought I'd ask around in the mean time... Anyway, we've been on soy formula for the last two months. I'd love to transition her to something else now that she's a year, but haven't decided what yet. I screwed up and gave her normal formula earlier, and the poor thing didn't do well, so I think anything with cows milk is out. Anyone do soy milk?

Re: Hi / Soy formula question

  • Hi - LO was on soy formula as well, at about 9 months I transitioned her from enfamil soy to enfamil enfagrow soy - basically same stuff but cheaper.  Then as she started to hit 1 YO, we started to mix WCM in with the formula - slowly changing the ratios.  She is now on WCM and it has not seem to agitate her.  We didn't try soy milk.

  • my son is on Whole Lactose Milk, I wanted to try Soy but his dr said that since he cannot handle the WCM then we should give him the lactose milk. She said a toddler needs the nutrients of the whole milk whether its CM or LM because the brain is still developing. She did mention that if the Lactose milk didn't work either for him to try Soy milk, but we didn't need to because he was able to handle the WLM.

  • DS is on soy for allergies. The pedi recommended doing the toddler soy formula or soy milk. Soy milk is much cheaper, so it was an easy choice!

  • I tried soy milk with my DS and he had a horrible reaction to it.  He broke out in a bad rash and had diarrhea that lasted over a week.  He was BF so he didn't have the history with soy formula though.  He had been struggling a bit with WCM but after the soy fiasco we switched back and just limit what he takes in.  Hopefully, your LO has a better transition.  Sorry not to be more helpful.
  • My son is 13 months now and still using formula. We tried WCM 2-3x and it just wasn't working for my DS. He'd get eczema and really bad diarrhea. He can eat Cheese and he eats 1 whole milk yobaby yogurt each day and no issues. 8oz of WCM and bam his cheeks flare up.

I gave up on WCM for now even though pediatricians really push it. We have moved on to coconut and so far so good. A balanced diet does really cover what WCM can provide, but you have to be knowledgable about it.

Soy milk doesn't provide as much fat as WCM does and fat is really important for brain development. All of the sudo milks as I like to call them (Soy, Almond, Coconut) are usually fortified with the calcium and vitamin D needed, but are missing something that WCM offers. Coconut milk for example is missing the protein that WCM has, but luckily my son likes other forms of protein so he doesn't need protein supplemented. Soy is the fat so you can give foods rich with good fats like Olive oil on a sweet potato or an avocado.
