Cloth Diaper Type Training Pants?

I use disposable diapers for my boys, but I've heard that they can hinder potty training (pull ups too). I'd like to avoid going straight to underwear if possible. Do they sell anything that's like a cloth diaper but is intended for potty training?

Re: Cloth Diaper Type Training Pants?

  • Gerber makes a style of underwear for potty training kids...it has a bit of padding to absorb pee.  It is not a diaper at all though, a full on accident will still make a mess.  But I liked them for the early stages of potty training because they did help contain the mess to a degree.
Like these (but available at Target, no need to buy from here in bulk.)  https://www.amazon.com/Gerber-Training-6-pairs-Months-Colors/dp/B000UCJL1C/ref=pd_bxgy_ba_img_y

You could also use the old school diaper covers over them, I did in the car a few times.  I already own them because we used them over swim diapers as our pool requires...https://www.amazon.com/Gerber-Plastic-Pants-32-35-pairs/dp/B000KPZS34/ref=pd_sim_hpc_5  Once again, I bought them at Target.  I don't agree that they are hard to find at all.

  • Some nice ones that are also waterproof are Super Undies. We use those at night now, because DD refuses to wear anything she considers a diaper anymore, and she calls her Super Undies "panties."

For us, it was better to go straight to underwear during the day though. She didn't mind at all to pee in her training pants (Flip trainers) because she knew her clothes wouldn't get wet.

  • I'm hesitant to go straight to underwear because I dont want to need to change his pants several times a day or have to worry about doing laundry when clean underwear runs out. But if that's what works best, then I may just go ahead and do that.

Thanks for all of the info and links! I'll look into it all and see what will work best.

For those of you who went straight to underwear, for how long was it really messy? Just a few days or longer?

  • We did no bottoms and stayed home the first few days then commando for a month then underwear. It wasn't bad at all. We did this based on the theory that underwear feels too much like they have a diaper on so will more likely have an accident with underwear than commando.

I did this combo. The undies don't hold anything. When my DD had an accident, it was always a full bladder from waiting too long. The plastic pants held the pee in until I could throw her in the bathtub and clean her up.

I use these trainers overnight for my 3.5 yo. They're getting a little small on her (she's 37.5 lbs and 41"), but they would work for a smaller child.

I stuff the diapers with these inserts overnight and will probably use them when I eventually potty train DD3.

  • Oh, and I also used pull ups. Both of my older girls wouldn't pee in a diaper on purpose once they decided they were going to use the potty. I started potty training when they started telling me when they had to go. DD1 was 2.5 years; DD2 had just turned 2. DD2 didn't have the bladder control to make it to the bathroom all the time, so the pull ups (and eventually plastic pants) saved us lots of messy clean up.

  • Thanks again for all of the answers! I'm not convinced that DS1 is quite ready to start PT, but I'm getting myself prepared. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions soon haha. Everything you've said here has been very helpful!

  • We used cloth diapers but just went straight to undies.  The cloth trainers aren't super absorbent so they aren't going to take a full pee - just a dribble.
  • I'm new to the potty training (literally just a few days in), but it seems like the cotton training pants would be a waste of money. Laundry is laundry to me, and I might as well buy undies that will see her through potty training and beyond instead of ones that are only used a short time.
