Formula & Solids Intake Question - WWYD

Just curious to hear what you ladies have to say...

My DD hates her formula and has since she were prescribed it in September (never took more than 22 oz. in a 24 hour period).  Now that we've started solids, I'm lucky if I can get her to take 15 oz.  She is eating a lot of solids on most days- 2 tbsp of cereal with 3-4 jars of food per day.  Each jar is 2.5 oz.  In 24 hours, she gets 15 oz. of formula and 15-20 tbsp. of purees, and 2 tbsp. of cereal.

Per John's Hopkins (which I know isn't the bible but I use it as a reference), a 7-month old should get getting 30-32 oz. of formula, 3-5 tbsp. of cereal, and 8-12 tbsp. of purees in a day.  She's clearly eating too much of the solids and not enough formula.

I talked to her pediatrician about her low formula intake before Thanksgiving but he wasn't concerned since she is growing.  Yesterday, I couldn't even get her to take 10 oz. of formula.  And she never drinks more than 3 oz. in one feeding.  Do you think I should call her doctor again?

Sometimes I think I make the matter worse by worrying about how much she is eating.

Thanks for any feedback!!

Re: Formula & Solids Intake Question - WWYD

  • I wouldn't be concerned. If shes happy, and gaining weight, that's all you can really do. It's good that shes getting all that baby food though! My only suggestion is to make sure shes eating things high in nutrients- avocado (high in omega 3 fats), spinach, beans and eggs.

sometimes when they're teething very bad they go on a hunger strike. I've noticed DD likes baby food a lot more than formula when shes hurting from teething; she likes to chew on the food, and the spoon.

Have you calculated calories to see if the food is making up for the lost formula calories?

I would call the pedi again if the formula intake has dropped even more.  We are not hitting the formula recommendation so we have to supplement some vitamins.

ETA: meaning I would call since you seem concerned

  • My main concern would be dehydration. If she has plenty of wet diapers that would make me feel better personally. I would definitely call the pedi if she isn't having enough wet diapers or if she gets fussy. Good luck!
  • Thanks ladies!  I guess my concern has to due with the nutrients @raw1299 and @Blueyed228.  Maybe I should ask the doctor about vitamin supplements to be on the safe side.  She seems to be having enough wet diapers.

And she's definitely growing!  Thanks again!!

  • our pedi made it super clear to us that S can't drop in the amount she drinks even if she eats more. that might be because she's not on the weight spectrum at all, but I know, at least for us, if she dropped that much of her intake, he'd be really mad and make us cut back on the food.

  • I just think your pedi would be interested to know that it dropped further.  22 to 15 (and less) might be enough for your pedi to want to make some changes.

Or maybe not.  Who knows.  But its a big enough change that I would call and have a discussion about it.
