Mongolian Spots

When LO was born the Pediatrician came in several times to talk to us.  One of those times he mentioned that LO had a Mongolian spot on his back/buttocks area.  He said they were very common in mixed race babies and that it was nothing to worry about and it should fade and most likely disappear in a few years.  Well I looked for it shortly after that and did find a darker area back there but nothing too obvious. Well the other day I was lifting LO up to put him in the bath and caught a glimpse of his butt in the mirror.  It seems like the spot is much darker now and his little bottom looks bruised.  It isn't sensitive and I plan on asking the pediatrician about it at his next appointment.  I just worry about what other people might think if they notice it.  It looks like he has been abused. :(  Does anyone have experience with Mongolian Spots?  How long did they take to go away?  (I know every child is different, just trying to get an idea I guess)

For those of you that have no idea what this is (I had never heard of it before LO was born):

Re: Mongolian Spots

  • We don't have the spot though do have a mixed babe. However she sometimes bruises her little tush in her bath tub on the hard crotch knob thing when she kicks her legs to bounce around. We couldn't fig it out for weeks but just thought of it and that's our culprit for bruising.

  • DD had 2 at birth. One on her shoulder and one on her butt. The one on her shoulder was completely gone by 2 months, and the one on her butt has gotten a shade lighter but is still noticeable. My mom said I had one on my back at birth and it was completely gone by the time I was 2-3. They are very common in brown skinned races and almost always disappear by early childhood.

  • Dd has a small one on her butt along the crack. A little girl I nannied for had it also and she was 4. At the time I didn't know what they were called but I assumed birth mark. They didn't look like a bruise to me. They greyish color was different than bruise coloring.
    One DD born 9/23/13.
    We're one and done!
  • DS also had one just above his buttcrack and at one point it did look like a large bruise bit started fading after that and now at 2.5 I can barely see where it was.

  • I am part native american and have had one since birth.  My mom actually asked me about it the other day and was looking for one on LO. He does not have one.

  • LO is mixed and has been rocking her rather large (butt crack to mid-back, side to side) spot since birth, and it hasn't changed at all in the last 12 weeks, 2 days.

When my mom saw it for the first time, she was horrified that it was some giant bruise.

  • The only experience I have with Mongolian spots is through the years I worked in Japan.  Lots of the little kids still had their spots in nursery school and even into junior highschool.  And I dated a Korean once who had one still into his adulthood.  Just treat it like a birthmark, and ignore it.
  • None of my kids ever had anything like this and they are all biracial.

  • My husband is Indian. Thanks for the input ladies! Makes me feel better that I am not alone. I hope it is noted in his chart somewhere. I am sure it is, because they mentioned it. I will ask when we go for our 4 mo appt. I don't want some DFS drama some day if it doesn't fade.

@JocelynB0911 My pediatrician mentioned that it is more frequent (and pretty common) with people of Pacific Islander, Polynesian, Southeast Asian and/or Mexican decent... I don't know the exact heritage of you or your husband, but perhaps for your ethnicities it isn't as common.

My husband is Mexican and Filipino and my nephew's father is also Filipino, which is what I attribute them having their spots to.

    ETA: added after thought

And that's probably the reason they don't have them! I never knew it was more of one ethnic group than others.
