Train sets - so confused

We went to a toy store today and DS was mesmerized by the train set (on a table), so I think it may be cool to get him one at some point. But there seems to be so many choices! What's the difference between the super expensive Thomas the Train ones vs. just the normal Ikea ones? Does it matter?
