Babies on the Brain

Ovulation, Hormones, & Changes

Hi! First timer here...

Looking for some direction :-). I am mid twenties, newly married, and have always struggled with irregular cycles. I have always had the typical, "fun" PMS symptoms of cramping, bloating, etc.etc. I started NFP charting in February of this year and have really learned a lot about my body (which is SO empowering!) I am very familiar with when I ovulate & all that goes along with it, and that is why I'm here! Please excuse me as I may get a little TMI here...

My husband and I decided after we were married that we were no longer going to be using any types of contraception. We are not TTC but also not TTP, and are just charting and not having intercourse on the days I am fertile. The past few months I have had some significant changes to my cycle that are abnormal, for me. Three months ago I had newer symptoms of extreme fatigue, major back pain, and acne when ovulating, and the week follow. Last month, while ovulating, ON TOP of all the usual symptoms, I began having hot flashes & nausea. THIS month/week ON TOP of all the usual AND the new, I have had THE MOST bizarre additions. This week, it has been rather painful to have intercourse (by the way, I have a clean bill of health..) Yesterday, I woke up to was I can imagine water breaking to feel like. I completely, uncontrollably leaked clear, watery, odorless fluid in significant amounts. I then became crampy, lightheaded, and disoriented. I immediately went to the doctor as to which she said I checked out fine, said there was a cyst on my right ovary, and that could explain many of the symptoms, but had no idea what would cause the "gushing." Today I have had the same cramming, burning, & aching in my pelvis, as well as pain in my teeth???! My husband is concerned that something is "off" that we are not getting answers about & is concerned for the future when we are TTC. MY brain immediately goes to "POAS!" because these symptoms are so off the wall? (which I have done every month to expected BFN) ...

Can I possibly be going through some mid-twenties hormone change where I am experiencing significantly high levels of estrogen? Could the cyst be triggering more of a hormonal release? Could this explain yesterday's episode? Should I be concerned and demand further tests from the doctor? Could any of these symptoms effect my future bun:( ? Am I being irrational? Better yet, should I just PO another danged S? ;-)

Furthermore, I am 3 DPO, still obnoxiously symptomatic, and very open to all comments & suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Ovulation, Hormones, & Changes

  • You're not pregnant if you're tests are negative and you had a clear thermal shift indicating ovulation 3 days ago. I would assume that you're just noticing a lot of fertile quality cervical fluid now that you're actually paying more attention to it. Cysts absolutely can impact hormones (and their subsequent side effects) so that probably plays a part. I also wonder if you have a yeast infection or UTI or something going on with the burning and aching, but if not it really could just be chalked up to mittelschmerz and maybe high rates of progesterone in your system. FWIW, I've always had hot flashes and nausea during/shortly after ovulation, so that doesn't really strike me as odd at all.

If it happens again or continues you also might want to have your thyroid and iron levels checked (dizziness can be linked to low iron) but I really doubt anything you're experiencing right now could have an impact on a future pregnancy in any significant way. (IE - if you have low iron, you take an iron supplement. If your thyroid is whacky, you take some synthroid, etc)

Thanks for the response! I guess I should have clarified that I knew, once I got a BFN for each month, I knew I wasn't pregnant. It's mores the abnormal symptoms for ME that keep me checking each cycle, mainly because we are not doing anything to prevent besides NFP.

I tested negative for any bacteria presence, so I'm not worried about a UTI etc, however the DR did send off the cultures for further testing. It's just so bizarre, the consistent changes in my cycles over the past few months. I guess thats all part of the woman body? And you are right, I AM much more in tune with my body now then before.

I just want to make sure everything is healthy for our future. We plan on TTC this time next year. :)

    Thanks again!

    Hmm.

The only thing I can offer is my own experience.  Every month I get a new set of symptoms for the month.  Sometimes it's nausea that lasts for weeks.  Sometimes it's an uncontrollable desire for Starburst (that was a strange month!).  Sometimes it's dizziness and lightheadedness.  Sometimes, it's three or four of these at once.  This month, along with nausea and lingering lower back pain, all I want to eat is pasta with butter.  Should I try something else, I get a strong food aversions.  It's strange.  However, it's how I am.  For years, this is how I've been.  Each new cycle brings new crap that I just chalk up to "so, this is my next thirty days.  Alrighty."

I've never had gushing liquid, but I've also never had cysts.  Since this is new, I'd monitor the situation.  If things get worse, back to the doctor you should go.

excellent AND understandable advice! thank you!

Same here... not to the same extent, but I get nausea and food aversions at any and all points during my cycle. Each cycle is different. Today, (CD15), I almost threw up while I was eating lunch. I literally could not choke down this turkey sandwich. But I'm like, whatever... I guess I don't like turkey today lol.

Some cycles I have spotting throughout, some cycles I have no spotting at all. It's really a crapshoot.

Try not to obsess over the symptoms just yet... there's plenty of time to do that during your 2WWs when you start TTC lol. GL.
