Not feeding self at 17 months

DD will not use spoons or forks to feed herself. She will scoop food up with them, just won't put them in her mouth. I have showed her how to do it multiple times but she refuses to do it herself.

Any suggestions on how to get her to do this herself?

  • I think doing it hand over hand for awhile helps. LO holds the spoon and put your hand over hers and help to scoop and get it to her mouth. She will eventually learn how to do it.

  • DD uses a fork but not a spoon- she doesn't get it yet.

She gets VERY frustrated when trying to use a spoon because she things it should pick up food like a fork. Also the chunks have to be pretty big for her to stab them with the fork (baked sweet potato chunks)

Sometimes I have to stick the bite on the fork and hand it to her- then she eats it and tries for herself.

Just give it more time. I let DD do as much as she wants and can on her own- it's not until she gets frustrated that I step in and show her and help her.
