Froom Good to BAD! (XP)

I keep hearing the first 6 weeks are the hardest when it comes to breast feeding. But, I feel like my daughter and I are going backwards. She started off with a decent latch, it worked for us. There was little to no pain. The past two weeks she has been doing this loud sucking noise, and milk spills out of the side of her mouth. It is very uncomfortable for me. I know it is an incorrect latch. It's terrible, I dread nursing her. I just don't understand how it can go from good to bad? She is 6 weeks 3 days, so I feel as though we should have this down by now. Is it too late for either for use to get it right? Suggestions please!!

  • DS1 did the same thing. Just keep correcting her. She'll get it right again.

  • Yeah, regressing a little here too. His latch is fine, but getting him latched is the issue. He has milk spill out the sides now too, but it's not uncomfortable. Like pp said, kelleymom.com has some invaluable tips, plus go to YouTube and watch breastfeeding videos. I know for me visual aids really help.

  • At what point does it start? I've noticed that behavior with my son, once he's just about drained the breast and is done. I burp and reoffer, seems to work. If it happens from the start, I would suggested a forceful letdown...
  • Sounds like an over-active letdown.  First make sure she has a correct latch, and then once the latch is right listen for the letdown and maybe help her detach until the letdown calms down (30sec-1min).

DD would choke during the letdown, and so I detached her at the time it was expected.  Now she seems to be keeping up with the letdown, and gulps it down.
