How to bring up part-time?

I'm setting up a meeting with my boss to discuss maternity leave. We just reorganized - my boss was my boss's boss before the reorg and works at a different site, so this will be a phone call.

I'm sending a brief agenda with bullet points on what I'd like to discuss. One item is coming back part-time for 15 weeks after my 12 week leave. Should I include this in my agenda to give him the heads up or would it be better to bring up in discussion?

For reference, I've worked with this manager for 4 yrs and he know me pretty well.

Re: How to bring up part-time?

  • I suggest putting it in writing.  I discussed coming back PT using intermittent FMLA with my boss before I went on mat leave.  DC gives an extra 4 weeks on top of the federally imposed 12 weeks of FMLA and I was going to use the 4 weeks as intermittent to only work 3 days a week for a few months.  Well, 2 weeks before I was scheduled to return to work I got a phone call from the Director of HR saying I wouldn't be able to use those 4 weeks intermittently - they'd found some loophole that doesn't guarantee intermittent usage, it is at the discretion of the employer.  So I had to return FT sooner than I wanted.  My lesson was to get everything in writing and signed off on before the next leave.
