Pregnant after IF

1st OB Appt and Questions

I had my first OB appt today after it was cancelled earlier in the week due to snow. They did all the usual blood work, pap, etc, and an ultrasound. Baby is measuring right on track at 8w2d, heartbeat of 190. The doctor said everything looks great and chance of mc at this point is only ~3%, but of course I have to worry about something which is that the heartbeat is too high. Crazy, I know! It looks like the normal range goes up to 180. Anyone else have a high heartbeat early on? My next appt isn't for 4 weeks, which will be the NT scan at MFM and a regular OB appt.

Also, my RE had said to stop prometrium once I reach 10 weeks but OB said wait until end of 10 weeks. Go with RE or OB? Or maybe in between--2 times a day until the start of 10 weeks then once a day for a week?

Although I am worried, the excitement if finally really starting. Thinking of names, how to announce, etc. We even told DS tonight, and he is so excited to be a big brother. He was telling us all the things he is going to do to help. He is growing up way too fast. Maybe the unplanned larger age gap will work out well :)

Re: 1st OB Appt and Questions

  • I don't have any advice on the HB, but I'm glad to hear everything checked out ok at your appointment.

As far as the prometrium, I'd go with whatever you were comfortable with. Staying on it a bit longs can't hurt anything if you need to stay on it for peace of mind.

  • It sounds like a good appointment! Try not to let Dr. Google get to you too much!  I know it's hard, but if your doctor wasn't concerned about the heart rate then I am sure you are fine.
As for the OB v. RE thing, if the OB recommends staying on it longer, even knowing what your RE recommended, I would go with the OB advice.  I don't think it can hurt to stay on it longer and it seems that most REs don't really follow pregnancies after 10 weeks so your OB probably has more experience at that point.

  • I would probably follow the more conservative advice on the prometrium too, and go the extra week. On the heartbeat thing, I remember seeing just recently that the HB normal range at eight weeks actually goes up to 200. I will try to remember which website it was. At your next appt, it will probably have dropped lower. So glad your appt went well!

Here it is... I was reading an article on baby myths debunked and this was one of the sections. Says a normal range is 170-200 at 8 weeks. And I think babymed is pretty reliable as far as I can tell. Hope this helps! ETA: spelling

  • I also heard the that HBs are higher in the beginning of pregnancy and then come down. I have no idea why but I wouldn't worry especially if they didn't say anything!

  • I think the heartbeat is fine, sounds like it's nice and healthy :)

I'd probably stop the meds end of 10 weeks, just to be more conservative. After graduating from the RE I still emailed him to see if I could stop at 10 weeks instead of 12. He was totally fine with it and I ended up stopping 9 1/2 weeks. The PIO just became brutal near the end.

    Congrats on graduating!
