I've seen suggestions of how others will nurse their LOs on a mattress on the floor where they can sneak away. I'd like to try this, but I'd be concerned that he would wake up and start crawling around. How do you manage to make this work?
DS is 25 months old and sleeps on a mattress next to our bed. When he wakes up, he stretches and groans and rustles enough that I hear him and wake. If I don't wake up (and move down to nurse him...stay asleep, boy! Mama's still sleepin'!) fast enough, he sits up and says "Mama? Mama!", which is all it takes.
I'm fine with him exploring on his own, though he hasn't attempted this even once in his life - he wants me as soon as he wakes. We have things baby/toddler-proofed and all, so I know he's ok. There's nothing on this floor that is unsafe, and the stairs have a closed gate across the top. The truth is, though, that I wouldn't sleep through him moving around. It's just not a potential scenario that concerns me.
I don't know about your LO, but if when mine wakes up in the middle of the night, he whines, fusses, and cries, long before he's even rolling about, much less trying to crawl and curiously get into stuff. So I never even thought about it.
The only thing that worried me was that he'd roll in his sleep (which he sometimes does) and roll the 4-5 inches off the mattress and onto the hardwood floor. So, I put a pillow up next to the mattress so if he rolls, he has a cushy landing.
