Lesson Learned OB/GYN

So, one of the biggest/most repeated pieces of advice on this board is not to bother using your OB/GYN for fertility issues and go straight to a RE.

Well, I ignored that advice, thinking I could get some basic tests done at the OB first, before I spent the $$ on the RE consultation. Yeah, not so much. So, now I can say, don't be like me and ignore that advice :)

First, she didn't require the FSH/LH test to be done on CD 3... so those results probably wouldn't even be accepted by an RE if I do end up going to one, and I'd just have to pay for it again.

Second, she prescribed Clomide before the results of my bloodwork were even completed. When I asked her if I should wait for the results, she said no, it didn't matter. (so, obviously she didn't recommend any monitoring to be done)

Third, I ovulate late and deal with occasional insomna... both signs of low progesterone. When I asked about getting progesterone tested, she said "that (luteal phase defect) is just a myth." OK... I can understand that LPD has it's roots in TCM, so she may not want to go there... but um, I don't have to look any further than the website of my nearest RE to know that progesterone matters!

And this is from a doctor who's profile states that she "has a special interest in assisting couples with infertility."

  • I feel the same way.  With my last 2 pregnancies, my OB put me on promestrium but never checked my progesterone levels until I was miscarring and my levels was 1.0

  • I'm so sorry, that is terrible :(

Yes, I actually did feel like I might have to consider a new OB for pregnancy, which is frustrating.
