Infertility

Weird comment (a rant)

DH and I went to the bank to discuss our finances for the next year, which includes a new(er) car, as well as our upcoming cycle. After explaining what IVF was (because she'd never heard the term before???) she got all excited and started congratulating us?!?!?

I get that unless you've been through it yourself, you don't really *get* it, but what's up with the congrats? "Congratulations! You get to spend a ton of money for a *chance* at something that most other people get to do for free!" or maybe "Congratulations! You get to have your lady bits invaded by science!" or possibly "Congratulations! You'll possibly be indebted to us and have a constant reminder from me every single month if it doesn't work!"

We really wanted to pay for the cycle in cash, but after everything we've been through in the last 2 years, financially, physically, and emotionally, we just want to get this show on the road! I dread the thought of it failing and still having to pay off a loan every month though. (We don't qualify for shared risk.) And now it's like the bank is all excited about us going into debt for this. I'm just glad DH didn't smack her I guess?

I'm just frustrated. Thanks for letting me get that out!

Re: Weird comment (a rant)

  • Ahhh, yes! We've totally gotten a weird congrats or two after telling people we're doing IF treatments. It baffles me, and puts me in this weird self-preservation mode where I go on about how there's only a chance it'll work and not a high one at that and blah blah blah. At which point the person will think I'm a negative Nelly and tell me how I have to stay positive and believe it's "meant to be." (And I'm left wanting to throat punch someone.)

Seriously, though. it's great news you got some finances worked out! I'll keep my FX for you guys.
