PR- anybody have a boy with a fat pad?

I know, this is a weird question.  My bmb is pretty sparse these days, so I figured I'd ask here.

My 16 month old has a pretty significant fat pad in his pubic area.  His scrotum always looks tight and shriveled.  His doctor always palpates his testicles when he has a well child check and they are both descended, although she sometimes has to work to get to both of them.  She isn't concerned so I'm not either, most of the time.

I'm just wondering if any one else has a kid with this going on, and if so, when did it go away?

Re: PR- anybody have a boy with a fat pad?

  • My son has it and it has caused him to have penile adhesion issues. He is only a year.

DH has one too, when he is thinner it goes down some. We had to see a Urologist when we did IVF and  inspected it but said it was fine. That as long as his testes were descended and it didn't interfere with the function of his penis it was mostly a cosmetic issue.

@persephonerose, do they think it is genetic in some instances then?

Has your son's doc said there would be any form of treatment or specialist visit if it doesn't resolve by a certain time?

  • DS still has it, and he is 3.5.

  • My son is almost a year and has had this since he was only a few months (basically when he started to get chubby). Whenever I change his diapers, his penis ways appears to be shriveled up and "sucked into his pubic area" (for lack of a better term) bc of the fatty tissue surrounding it. The pedi always checks him out at his well appts and palpates his testicles. He says everything appears normal and that as he grows and thins out, the fat pad should disappear on its own. I do plan to ask about it again at DS's 12 month appt coming up.

I think it has a lot to do with how they are build. Where they store their fat. Our pedi is not concerned. He said that for the adhesion issue it generally resolves its self once they "find themselves" and start pulling on it. Our adhesion is very minor though. I know in my research on penile adhesion that in rare cases some kids have surgery to remove a bit more of the foreskin to account for the fat pad pushing it forward.

For adult males if they are worried about the fat pad or have other issues like yeast infections due to the penis being sunken into the skin they can get liposuction done. DH has never had any problems, so he didn't even know it had a name until we saw the Urologist.

Same here. She didn't mention it at 9 months so I have to remember to ask at 12 months. I just make sure to check for adhesions every diaper change. And coconut oil helps keep things slick down there.

  • I'm bumping this because I've been googling and the term "fat pad" pretty much ONLY pulls up information about the penis being affected, e.g. "buried penis".

My son doesn't have that.  His penis looks normal.  It's JUST his scrotum that looks weird.  I put him on the toilet for fun this afternoon and it looked like he didn't even have a ball sack.  It freaks me out!

I can't edit this far out, or else I'd eta.  Thanks!

  • So basically, is anyone's little boy's scrotum affected by a fat pad?

  • Yup! DS1 looked like he didn't have a scrotum at times. His penis also looked very, very small.

Now that he's older (3) and has lost a lot of his baby chub it looks completely normal again.
