Any moms or dads with a VSD?

Hi ladies,
My husband was born with a ventricular septal defect that was closed with surgery when he was 5. My SIL (husbands brothers wife) was recently pregnant and mentioned she had to have additional testing done to my DH's VSD.

Has anyone had experience with this and know what tests are usually done? Blood? Amnio? Ultrasounds? I haven't been able to find much online. Unfortunately, they lost their son at 28 wks (due to an unrelated heart defect), so I don't feel comfortable asking her.

Thanks for all of your help!

  • You might need to do a detailed level 2 ultrasound at 20 weeks, and possibly a fetal echocardiogram. We do a lvl 2 ultrasound because of cleft palate in the family. My son has a heart defect that includes a VSD and that was discovered via lvl 2 ultrasound. They then did a follow up echo to look at the extent of the defect. We will have more echos over the pregnancy to monitor.

  • At 22weeks in utero we found out that my son had heart issues.  We would not know more till he was delivered 16 weeks later.   Very upsetting to wait to find out more.  It's stressful.
He was born Nov. 15th (5 weeks old today) and we found out at less than a day old we were told he had VSD.  It appears the moderate hole is trying to close so we are being hopeful.   May require surgery anytime from now to 6 months.   Meeting with Cardiologist every month and meeting with Children's Hospital every month so basically we see a cardiologist every 2 weeks!  It's a trying time.
    Just remember to breath.
