S/O: naming regret

Would you have picked the same names for your child(ren) if you could have named him/her/them without input from your DH/SO?

DS's name is not what I would have picked at all, but I am glad we did. (My choice at the time was Jackson Scott).

I love DD's first name, but it wasn't my #1 choice. DH picked her middle name, and it's very generic. (If DS didn't have an "M" name, DD would have been Maren Elizabeth...but I didn't want matchy sounding names).

  • Ds1, yes. Ds2, absolutely not.

M's first name would have been what ended up being the first part of her middle name, and E's middle name would be Joy.

  • Probably not, but I'm not 100% sure.

We were considering Audrey Elinor, Audrey Johannah, Audrey Marie, Elinor Catherine (nn Nora), Nora Catherine.

Audrey Elinor was our front runner until the day we found out for sure she was a girl, and then we got cold feet.

We went with Elinor Catherine nn Nora, but if it had been my choice, she probably would have been either Audrey something or Nora Catherine.

  • DS's first name would be the same. His middle name wouldn't since it's a family tradition for DH's family. It wasn't on my radar, though I like it.

  • Nope, but I can't remember what was on our list honestly. DH totally took advantage of my post birth fog and when the nurse asked what his name was he said "LO, right?" and I was all like, "yeah, whatever" Not to say I don't like it, but it was DH's top pick, not mine.

  • No, DH selected her first name (I chose the middle name) and it's a family name on his side, so I probably wouldn't have thought of it own my own.  But I love it.
  • Nope. I think Rosie would of been somethingvery gaelic or Alice . Cade would of been Ewan or Deacon.

  • We were in complete agreement on first name, which I love even more than I did when we picked it.

Middle name was a weird compromise that I'm not in love with, although it flows well.

This is what happened with DD2's middle name. DH and my mom ganged up on me.

I think I still would have gone with her first name for sure. Now, if H's last name were different, there would have been a whole bunch of "E" names I would have considered, such as Eleanor, Evelyn, Eloise, etc. (as it is now, an "E" name would have made some not great initials)

  • Probably not. DS's first name is DH's middle name. Not what I would have picked on my own, but I love it now. On my own he would have been Elliott or an Italian name (like the aforementioned Carmine). But carmine on my blonde blue eyed baby probably wouldn't have been the most fitting.

  • Had I been single from the get go, he would have had the same FN with a different MN. I compromised on the MN which makes me sad but I won the FN so... I guess I can't complain too much!

  • Both of my kids would have very different names.

  • I still would've done Vivian. Boys name we agreed 100%. Future girls (if there are any) will be really tough.

  • I honestly don't know. We did both agree on a boy name (Liam) so easily but really struggled with picking DD's name.

  • This content has been removed.
  • Maybe this is a somewhat flameful confession, but I seriously would never ever just give carte blanche to DH to pick any portion of any LOs name without at least some discussion and agreement.
Although exSO did first suggest the name we went with and the name I would still use on a future child, one of his first suggestions was Nala, and I fully believe he would use that name. So no. Fuck no.
So he is a big fan of The Lion King?

Yes, I am fully content with the name we picked for DS...especially since towards the end we actually changed the middle name we were originally going to use and I'm SO glad we changed it.  I'd still choose this same name again if I had full choice. (Jason Allen... Allen is DH and FILs middle name too)

For the second hypothetical kid that is not yet conceived... if it's a boy, my H refuses to use the boy name I want to use and it makes me sad....because it's a meaningful family name.  (The name is Max).  I think it's a great name, but H is not budging. :(  So I'll have to settle on a compromise for eventual baby number 2 if it's a boy

We both agree on the girl name though (Aria Jean)....and it actually leans more towards my preference since the middle name Jean is for my grandmother.

  • This is completely off topic, but The Lion King reminds me of this skit on SNL:

  • My first choices for names were more traditional Polish names. But I'm glad it worked out the way it did.

  • I brought up the name "Daniel Jacob" so many times that DH put it on the veto list because he was so sick of it. He chose DS1's first name, I chose the middle. I chose DS2's first name (yep, Daniel was still vetoed) and he chose the middle. But I'm glad DH "won" because the names suit both boys perfectly. My girl name was Clara and no one was going to overrule me on that one. Alas, my insistence guaranteed I would only have boys. :-)

  • Like I said in the other thread, LO is an IV, and I probably never would have picked that combo. But I like it and would have chose something similar, classical and biblical.

We've already agreed on my favorite name for a girl (Evangeline :x) now I just have to get the nerve to use it.

  • Without MH, I'd probably never moved to Canada and would still be in Germany - and then my kids would have German names. I cannot pound my head against the wall enough when I hear mispronounced English names back home. Plus, they often don't flow with the last names - it's kinda the youneek thing over there.
