Working from home question

I'm thinking way ahead here.

With my singleton I worked in an office setting up until the day I delivered.

I predominantly work from home now. Which is a huge advantage in many ways, but will especially come in handy down the line when things get really uncomfortable. I can easily work from bed if necessary. I get most of my work done by phone and email.

My question is, given my situation, would there be any reason down the line for my doctor to ask me to stop working all together? My work can be stressful during busy times (like now, ugh!) and I tend to work 8-10 hours a day. But like I said, I don't need to move around a ton.

Just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation.

Re: Working from home question

  • I worked from home and by 30 weeks I was done.
I wasn't sleeping well at night and needed naps during the day, it was hard to sit in a way I could use the computer comfortably. Even though I could be in bed/couch/etc.
If our livelihood depended on it I probably could have gone longer and it was my decision not the drs but dr was very supportive of me being done.

  • It just depends on how you feel. I was at the office until 6:30 the day before my c-section at 37w6d. I only worked part time throughout my pregnancy though. It was mostly a desk job with occasional court appearances. An average day wasn't too stressful, only around deadlines.

  • My doctor told me that the only reason she would require me to stop working is if my blood pressure got too high - otherwise I can continue to work as long as I am comfortable.  I am 32 weeks today and in the office (work at a desk) - although they did give me a parking spot right next to the door.   My plan is to work from home after the new year until I can't work any longer.

  • I worked from home for about a month after I left my classroom (finished out the quarter sending in sub plans, making worksheets, emailing the new sub, and a colleague who lived nearby dropped off papers for me to grade a couple times a week). Physically, it was do-able since I didn't have to be on my feet, but it did add more stress than I was anticipating, and I was glad to have the reprieve when the quarter ended.

I think it would be mostly up to you if you felt like working was manageable or not. I don't know how far along you are, but, like PP said, sleeping can get really hard toward the end, so that can take a lot out of you. If there was one thing I learned during my twin pregnancy it was to be ready to change my plans because things can change so quickly from one day to the next.

  • I worked at an office until 37 weeks. If I could've worked from home, I would've been fine working up until delivery at 38 weeks 4 days. The daily commute was hard on my back by then, and I frequently needed to change position and would've loved to have laid down, so working from home would've been feasible.

  • I work from home full time and I worked until 37 weeks. I wanted one week to not have to be "available" and try to rest a little before the babies came on the scheduled c-section at 38W 2D. But I wanted most of my maternity leave for after the kiddos arrived.

I didn't have any complications but I was exhausted and in pain. I got a laptop pad for my lap and was in bed or on the couch most of the time. I took naps when I needed to and made up the time during the evenings.

I guess unless you have to be in the hospital with complications you wouldn't really have any reason not to work from home. I would have liked a little more time before the delivery, but on the other hand it was nice (and essential) to have a full 4 months of maternity leave after the babies were born.
