NT Scan

This may be a really dumb question, but I have never opted to get the NT Scan before…is there any extra reason to get one with twins?  Can they even tell what markers are attributed to which baby?  I will be 12 weeks tomorrow and I have an appointment, so I figured it was worth asking :-).

Re: NT Scan

  • We did our NT scan because we didn't have an early u/s and I wanted to see my 'baby'!

2 hours later both peanuts co-operated.

Pretty much the same for us! We found out it was twins at the NT scan but either way I would have elected to have it done.
Type 1 Diabetic, Hashimotos, RA. Its twins!!!!  EDD 1/6/2014 Di/di b/g twins.
  • NT scan with twins can get all the markers just like one baby.  However if you do the blood work at the same time, my MFM says the chance of the NT scan and blood work showing chromosomal abnormalities is 79% in twins.

I got the scan because I love any chance I can to check out the babes!

NT scan with twins is exactly the same as for a singleton..just with two babies! We got all the measurements/ markers, it just took longer than a single appt. It's also great to have the scan so they can check sacs, placentas, cord flow and compare LO's sizes etc... I'd never turn down an NT scan, personally.
All of this. I just had mine done Monday and it was a long appt (a little over an hour) but they check the babies placement, blood flow, hearts, nasal bones, fluid measurements at back of the neck, their sizes, and they checked on my SCH. That, coupled with the results of the first tri blood tests, gave them an idea of our chances of genetic issues. We still have the quad screening before their final determination can be made.

I was on the fence about getting it done OP but I'm really glad I did.

  • These are babies #7&8 for us and I've never had an NT scan. Never been offered anything but quad and some other testing. Then again, all my drs know I don't do testing in first tri. In my mind, it is what it is. I do have the anatomy scan and that's nerve wracking enough.
With the twins I had anatomy and bi weekly cervical checks and will have fetal echo at MFM.
  • I had mine just so I could see the babies again. For us, it doesn't matter if something was wrong - we wouldn't terminate, but it was just about seeing babies again. And they were perfect! Coupled with the bloodwork, everything was great. I wasn't offered an NT scan with my daughter, but again, it wouldn't have mattered. Just like seeing them wiggling around in there.

  • I have never done the NT before but decided to do it this time so that I could meet with the MFM sooner.  Originally my first appt was set for 18w! That is way too late with mo/di twins.  I think it will help to get benchmark measurements and check on everything.

  • Should be the exact same as a singleton, but twice as long!  We did ours because our OB mentioned early detection.  If the MFM found an organ defect we could start seeing a specialist right away.  That was our determining factor.  We would have done it for that reason whether it was one, two, three or four babies :)

  • Same as PP's we did the NT scan pretty much to see our babies again.  Although my OB highly recommended having it done.
