Extra vitamins for twins?

I'm 18 weeks pregnant with twin girls and the first OB I went to told me I didn't need to take any extra vitamins for twins, but I forgot to ask my new OB at my last appointment what he thought.  Did your drs recommend anything extra to you?

Re: Extra vitamins for twins?

  • My OB specifically said that I should not. He did, however, put me on an additional iron supplement. But I'm a vegetarian, so he may have been trying to be extra cautious.

  • I asked and my OB told me NOT to take two.  She did ask me to take additional calcium and iron.  She also had me go home and check how much folic acid my prenatal had in it.

Just like most PP, I asked my OB at my 19w appt and she said that I should be fine with my one prenatal vitamin (I had printed off a list of the ingredients in it for her to approve when I first started taking them), that coupled with a somewhat healthy diet is fine.

However, I do take two tums in the morning for my calcium suppliment, per her request.

  • Your blood can really only carry a certain concentration of vitamins/minerals. Adding an extra prenatal vitamin won't actually add extra to your blood and will just end up getting peed out anyway!

This is only partially true. Some vitamins are water soluable-meaning you pee out what your body doesn't need. A,d, e, and k are fat soluble and can build to toxic levels if you take too much because you don't automatically pee out the extra.

I asked about taking an additional pnv, and my OB told me no. I do take extra calcium and a different folic acid because I have mthfr.

  • Extra folic acid (4mg). Both because there are two and because I have a seizure disorder, which means increased risk that the babies would too. It's known to help with neurological issues.

I found out at 5 weeks... my progesterone was low so they had me taking 100mg orally 3times a day along with 1 prenat, 2 calcium, 1 vitamin E, 1 vitamin C, 1 mag Ox, and 2 folic acid... oh and 2 fish oil

I split them up throughout the day because they made me so sick. I am now taking 2 prenat and extra folic acid and calcium. it helped ease up on my upset stomach

  • Mine recommended extra folic acid starting now (my appointment was at 8 weeks) and extra iron starting at 20 weeks. She said the more recent research indicates that I won't need extra calcium. If you do take extra calcium, though, you can't take it with your other vitamins because it will inhibit the absorption of some of them. You can always call and ask. They don't mind I'd you do :-)
