Nursery Themes

I can't remember if this has been discussed- if so, it was awhile ago.  I know it's still early, but since a few of us are starting to find out the sex of our LO's and a bunch of us will in the next month+ .. anyone thinking of nurseries yet?

My u/s is coming up in like 2.5 weeks (eeeekkk) so I was looking at paint colors online earlier.  We aren't doing a theme, per se, and we definitely aren't doing a "baby" nursery.  We'll be doing a room that can grow with him/her.  My MIL will hate it :D  We are doing SUPER bright colors, like neon.  Just fits our style completely. I can't wait.  Regardless of the sex, we are thinking blues, oranges and yellow, green.  Circles.  If it's a girl, we'll add a few extra touches of pink maybe.  But I want it bright, colorful and crazy. I can't explain what it will look like. but I can totally see it in my head.
The baby will be with us in our room for a bit, though, then move to his/her room.  But we'll start the room soon after the u/s.

What about you all?

Oh- adding..  I did a google search.  Not what I mean, I don't want stripes.  But I want something along these lines.. COLORS <3

Re: Nursery Themes

  • We are thinking yellow (we'll know the sex, but we aren't into pink and blue regardless) and sort of an animal theme -- but like you, somewhat minimal.

Probably do a cute animal border around the room and use smaller decorations that we can switch out/upgrade as LO gets older.

We just want the room to be warm and happy looking. The rest of the house is all warm colors and slightly Asian/zen-ish decor, so it will fit right in.

Neon isn't my personal style, but I love that photo! That looks like a fun room to grow up in. I kinda want that bed for myself! :)

  • All I know is that I want a light gray wall despite the sex of the baby.  From there I havent an idea so I look forward to seeing/hearing some ideas.

  • We're not doing a theme, just picking things that we like. I really want to do mint green with white furniture. If it's a girl I'd like to add coral accents and for a boy do yellow accents. But I'm always seeing things I like so this will probably all change!
  • Your nursery looks super fun!  It is really smart to make a nursery that is not too "babyish" so you don't have to change too much down the road.  I can only go from past experience because the room where the babies will eventually sleep is currently a playroom, and will probably stay that way for a while.  I typically keep babies with me in my room for six months, and I don't think I will be able to do a nursery before the baby comes.

That said, my DD's nursery was yellow with a pastel nursery rhyme toile theme.  I also included vintage dresses, porcelain dolls, antique books, etc.  I loved it :-)  Her room is currently a shared room with DD and DS, and has some of the same elements (mismatched, vintage-y decor), but more primary colors.

DS's nursery was a lot of primary colors and featured brightly colored classic toys.  I had classic alphabet art cards that I framed in red and blue frames, and displayed a lot of wooden toys on painted Ikea spice racks.  Now, his room is the playroom.  The decor is the same, but it does not have a bed and changing table in there now.

I have always wanted to do a Peter Pan themed nursery.  Always.  Maybe someday I will :-).

  • I was thinking an LMNO Peas theme (it's a book) but have the main focus be on the alaphabet. But we will be moving right before this baby comes so we won't actually buy or decorate a nursery until after we move/after baby gets here. Baby will be in our room for at least 6m anyway

It probably isn't the style most would like ;) I already predict my mother in law to absolutely hate it. But, both DH and I are really into bright neon colors and wanted to do a nursery like that well before I got pregnant.   As long as we like it, right?

No, I DO like it -- it just would look out of place in my house. It's very different from our other rooms is all I meant. I like vibrant decor in general.

And your MIL had her chance to decorate a nursery already. Who cares what she thinks?

Edited because apparently in my excitement about my NT results I forgot basic grammar. Yikes.

  • We painted the walls gray (very trendy now). I'm thinking it will be a girl, and if it is, green and purple accents. If it's a girl, I'm also thinking a bird theme of some sort. Not an over the top theme, but maybe a few things. We painted a chalkboard onto part of the wall. I have dark wood furniture but I'd love to sand it down and paint it white. Not sure if this will be a possibility....H is very against this just because it will be a big project. We'll see. I get so stressed out about decorating and wanting everything to be perfect....and nothing ever is!
  • I plan on re-using DS's Forest Friends theme for the new baby (unless DS pitches a fit). We are moving so I figure that is the perfect time to let DS pick out his own big boy theme and hide away the baby room decor for a couple months. Frankly it is just more fun to pick out a theme with a little boy who I know will get excited about it and talk non stop about his new decor.

  • I'm starting to get SOOO excited about the nursery!  We are doing light gray walls and white crib for sure.  The colors will be white, gray, and navy blue for now... Once we find out the sex of the baby we will add in either hot pink or lime green!  We will do a mix of patterns... chevron, polka dots... nothing too babyish.

  • I have some wall decorations from my nursery when I was a baby that my grandparents kept for me. It's Raggedy Anne and Andy. I absolutely love them but my SO thinks they look creepy haha.

  • We're not going to have a specific theme. The room that will be the nursery is already yellow, so its staying that way unless I suddenly decide on light green (the color of key lime pie). We've decided on white furniture and we're planning on either teal or light blue chevron fabric for the curtains, crib skirts and changing pad cover. I'd like to find a brighter patterned area rug in a contrasting color but I am not really set on one particular color. We're team green but I was aiming for colors I liked and that were lighter because the room doesn't get tons of light.

I've been having the hardest time finding bedding that doesn't have a theme, so thank you! :)
  • @lcgroenewe love painting one of the walls chalkboard.  we did that in part of the basement but love it for the babies room!

  • I'm an interior designer, so I seriously CANNOT wait to start the nursery. I am not big on themes usually, so I'm more about having something beautiful with whimsical touches. I don't like rooms to scream "baby".

If it's a girl, our room will have touches of gold (I just gold dipped an antique dresser, and plan to paint a crib gold), black, mint, and white. For a boy, I have this amazing 1920's vintage circus print that I would love to design a room around. Colors would most likely be grayish green, and grays. I do plan on having a reading wall with pictures ledges regardless of boy or girl, because I am obsessed with books.

  • We are going with a music theme. Did you know at musical themed bedding is nearly impossible to find?! My husband and I both are really big into music in general. My husband recently picked up the guitar and drums, so he is completely digging this right now!

Ohh! That's awesome. I'm really into music, also (I play piano and guitar) so I'd love to see your room when done.

Plus they have that super fun tool to "try it out" on a nursery like yours. My mom is making our bedding but I've been using that tool to try and figure out what I like together.

  • We are doing a woodland/forest theme. DH and I aren't big on themes to begin with, so the walls will be neutral and the bedding I like best (so far) has shades of browns, greens, and blues. We'll have dark wood nursery furniture and a glider with cream colored upholstery and dark wood as well.

We hope to have two LOs close in age, so this theme should work for both, regardless of sex. Plus, it reminds me of home in the Adirondacks of upstate NY, which is why I love it. :)

  • We don't have a full theme picked out, and likely won't.  However, I love the idea of light gray walls with white, yellow, and maybe navy accents - maybe a more girly color if we find our we're team pink.  I found some cute elephant decor on pinterest that I fell pretty hard for, so we may incorporate some of that too!

Sadly, we'll be moving shortly before or after baby is born, so we won't be doing any nursery decorating until we're settled in wherever we end up...

  • Everyone's nursery sounds great! DH and I love Winnie the Pooh, so we'll have their neutral bedding, with probably green walls. Cherry wood furniture too. I also want to put a big book quote on the wall above the crib (from etsy). We'll start it later this winter.

  • If it's a boy we'll do a hot air balloon theme and if it's a girl it'll be deep purple, turquoise and white and maybe a few butterflies for accents.
  • My theme is giraffes, since they're cute and gender-neutral and we don't know the sex yet.  We rent, so we can't paint - but we're going to make use of wall decals to add lots of color.  I'm thinking maybe some rainbow accents too.
  • Really not sure, but I want dark wood furniture, trees/forest decals/mural, and a very special quote written above the door. For a boy, we're keeping the walls gray, for a girl most likely gray, but might paint cream.
  • We live in a cape cod so our ceilings upstairs are slanted partially (not sure what that's called) we have a dresser built into the wall I'm going to refinish which I've always thought was cool. Going for a woodland theme as well :) going to paint a tree that goes up the wall and with slanted ceilings arches over the crib with falling leaves as a mobile. Wall color I'm unsure of but we are team green, and the rooms already a nice sage but I may go with Grey and classic whites and dark wood :)

  • C's nursery is a very pretty warm yellow, white curtains and then the artwork is mostly flowers (my grandfather and great-grandmother were both painters, so most of it is their stuff).  She'll be moving upstairs and this baby will inherit her nursery.  If it's a girl, same stuff stays.  If it's a boy, we'll change to grass green curtains and some animal artwork.  Easy enough to take down one painting and put up another, which is what I wanted when planning C's nursery.  I love the bright colors, OP!

  • Probably not doing too much of a theme...the baby will take over the guest bedroom and will just put the crib and changing table up...the room is about 14x16 and already has a queen size bed and chest of drawers which we will leave. When the baby gets a little older (toddler) and is out of the crib, we will probably decorate a bit more.
  • So as I mentioned earlier I want to do light gray walls..would darker wood still work for furniture purposes..I love dark wood.
    ~Kelly
  • That neon nursery looks super fun! Go with what YOU like :)

We already have the room painted with light gray walls and will go with an animal theme at first.  I want it to be easy to change up as baby grows up.  We aren't finding out the sex, so it will be gender neutral.
  • I think most dark wood would be too "warm" for a gray room, IMO. Although if you look hard enough you might be able to find a finish that works.

  • I think I'm leaning towards a hot air balloon theme, regardless of gender. The room we'll be using is already a grayish blue and I don't think either of us feel like painting. And I think it's a good way to make the color of the room work, even if we end up having a girl.

  • We are not doing a theme, but thinking the walls will be a darker grey (storm colored) with purple and teal accents.  I will put her name on the wall with white block letters too!  We will be moved out of this house by the time she is 2 so I'm not going to go all out with it.  I'm excited to start!

  • Mine is so dependent on if I can convince DH to paint or not.  We bought our place a year ago and all the walls were freshly painted with taupe right before we bought.  He thinks its stupid to paint when its not necessary but I really want a light grey room.  If I get my way I will be doing white furniture and for a girl it will have lilac as its main accent colour with maybe some owl touches and if it is a boy I'm thinking either Navy or light blue accents with some elephants.
If I don't get my way I'm thinking I might go with espresso coloured furniture and then I don't know about colours yet.

  • Love this! All of this is adorable! We fell in love with this owl theme! Saw it with pink too! My MIN is a great painter so she's going to paint this for us. Her late mother loved to paint birdhouses so we're going to put a few in the room and make then night lights so it's a way to have her watching over our baby. Love the other themes though!
