Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Toe Curling

My 10 month old is starting to stand on her own, and is very interested in walking with help.  We bought some shoes for her since she's standing, but mostly because of the cold.  We have noticed that she is constantly curling her toes under.  It causes some difficulty with getting her shoes on/keeping them on, and I'm wondering if it's going to cause problems with her walking.  Is toe curling this often normal?

Re: Toe Curling

  • Totally normal, don't worry about she will eventually stop.

  • I wouldn't worry about the toe curling but I wouldn't have her in shoes for very much of the day (if at all).

It is highly recommended that babies are left barefoot or in robeez type slippers until they are fully walking.  As in, running around outdoors.  It is best for the development of their feet and for the alignment of knees, hips, back etc.

Having shoes on, especially when they are learning to walk has a great impact on their development.

  • DD curls her feet too and I have noticed it's really hard to get shoes on her, I guess it's normal!
  • It's called the plantar grasp reflex, and babies have it until they're close to walking.  It helps them grab on and balance while they're learning.  This is why putting shoes on LOs is not necessary - their bodies are built to help them learn motor skills without!
