C-sections

Shaving or waxing before c-section

With DS1, I have no idea when I last shaved before my unscheduled c-section but it was at least 40 hours before since I was in labor at the hospital after my water broke for 40 hours first.

But now I read on the mayo clinic's website not to shave for a 24 hours before a c-section.  I guess this is to help prevent infection.  I was debating getting waxed this time if I don't go into labor first, but don't know if there is a time frame for that as well or if it could contribute to infection.  I just remember the hair starting to grow back in the steri strips and getting stuck in them and it being pretty painful and irritating.  I figure that waxing should keep the hair from growing back even longer than shaving.

Do you have a hair management plan for your scheduled c-section?  I have not been exactly vigilant with hair removal, especially now that I am just blindly shaving because my bump is too big to see but I know I don't want to get clipped at the hospital and would like to keep it from getting long for as long as possible after the birth.

  • I'm pretty sure they shaved that area for me last time since mine was an emergency. They would probably shave again this time.

  • I was just blind shaving right up until the morning of then the nurse touched it up. Maybe they just tell you not to so they can make sure it is a nice close shave right before?
  • I was told no shaving 48 hours prior to my scheduled csection. I had my husband use clippers two nights before, and I didn't need any touching up the day of surgery.

  • I think I shave 1-2 days beforehand? The nurse still had to shave me more though. My doctor never said anything to me about not shaving prior to a certain time.
  • First time, they shaved me... Poorly. It took longer for the ingrown hairs to heal than the incision! Second time, I scheduled a wax 3 days before the c/s. It was much better... No issues with ingrown hairs and I didn't have to worry about that area at all during those first few weeks of recovery. Will do the same this time.

  • I didn't have a scheduled c section, it was unplanned, and I sure Wish I had waxed. I had just clipped it down (not clean shave) a few days before. I've been dealing with the hair in steri-strips issues, ingrowns and general discomfort so my advice would be wax a few days before to allow for easier recovery/clean up
  • At my hospital it was advised to not wax or shave right before a c section or vaginal birth. They said to do it at least 7 days before. I had my Brazilian 2 / 3 weeks before. If I had known I was going in for a section I would have gone the week before because now I'm 5 weeks pp and am in desperate need of a wax and I'm afraid to go so soon.
  • they shaved me- I couldn't see that area too well, being hugely pregnant and all. Soooo yeah. haha
  • I talked about the lack of ability to see down there to shave and she said they rather shave me than me try and hurt myself...so that's what I did. I barely noticed the shaving, they did it after they did my epidural.
