3.5 year old regressing...HELP!

I am at a loss with what to do but its become very apparent that my son, who is 3.5, is regressing.  He used to sing his ABC's, count to 20, sing other songs, say his nightly prayers, color/paint, etc...and now it's like pulling teeth to get him to any of those things let alone answer someones question as simple as "whats your name/how old are you?".  He interacts with his friends and is very physically active, but when given simple instructions he can't comprehend and has to be walked through each step or repeated 15 times til he's completed it. It feels like I am talking to a wall sometimes until I start getting stern and counting to 10...thats the only time he will listen.

I asked his Dr. and he just said its normal and its not that he doesn't know those things but that he doesn't care.  I don't think I am buying that anymore.  Any suggestions or anyone else going through this?  He doesn't even like to sit and read with me anymore, he always says "my belly hurts" when he doesn't want to o something or answer my questions....anything anyone has would be helpful...I just don't know what to do or where to go from here. Thanks so much in advance...

  • I don't blame you for being concerned. Has he had any changes recently that might cause him to change his behavior - maybe starting a new school, moving, a new baby, etc.? If you don't feel like your doctor is listening to you, I would seek a second opinion. Maybe there is a child psychologist you could talk to as well.

  • We do have a younger son as well, but he is 1....I don't see that as being the problem, but I guess its always an option.  He goes to school 2 mornings a week but the only feedback I get from his teachers is that he eats very slow, but other then that he is doing great..I feel like I may need to have a longer talk with them when I can really explain my worries and get their feedback.  A child psychologist is a good idea, I will look into that...thanks!

  • He eats slow and complains of stomach pain... So what do you think is causing the pain and discomfort in his digestive system?  I wouldn't just blow off what he is telling you, and being in pain can well make you ignore people and not want to answer their questions.  If your doc won't investigate your child's symptoms, you might look into whether or not their is a food intolerance at play, or if you can find a doc who will treat your child's symptoms.
