Colic advice

Ladies, this new FTM needs advice. My 3 week old cries a lot, like for hours. After talking to my pediatrician, he says it's gas and we need to burp her better. I have tried burping after she feeds on each side (she's EBF), gas drops, and colic calm. I spend most of the afternoon rocking her, trying to calm her down, but as soon as I lay her down, she wakes and starts crying again. I don't think I've cried as much in the last 3 years as I have these last 3 weeks trying to figure out how to make her feel better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Colic advice

  • The laying down part makes me think of my DD who at 2 mos had silent reflux, but she had other symptoms also like screaming while eating and hiccups. My niece also screamed while eating and when her stool showed trace amounts of blood she was diagnosed with milk intolerance - I believe soy also. I am sorry your LO is upset. Wishing her colic clears up sooner than later.

  • You may have tried these things but here are my thoughts after having two VERY fussy babies: read or watch Happiest Baby on the Block or at least Google the 5 S's; use the swing, bouncer, rocker, RnP, whatever it takes; cut out dairy and possibly soy from your diet; get yourself foam earplugs so you don't get a splitting headache while trying to soothe LO; experiment with less clothes, more clothes, warmer and colder temps in the room; try baby wearing in a wrap or carrier.

And finally - make sure you have some help so you get a break from time to time. Even just walking outside for 5 minutes or a long hot shower each day will help. And know that this will pass. By the time my son was 6 months old I almost forgot the days when he cried all day long. Then I had DD and it started all over again! :-p

  • Thanks ladies! I downloaded the happiest baby on the block and an reading as much as she will let me while she's sleeping. I am also going to cut dairy out of my diet, I'm willing to try anything! I know she's going to cry, but I just want to be able to soothe her and help make her feel better.
  • Baths helped DS. Sometimes he'd get the baths a day.
Also, and I know this sounds crazy, but we'd out him in his car seat and hold it on to of the dryer wine it was running. That helped him more than the vibrating function on the bouncer or bassinet.

  • My first was very colicky.  It's no fun and I feel your pain.  The swing was my best friend.  It was one of the only things that kept her calm -- enough for me to have some sanity.  Good luck.

  • Probiotics, infant massage for colic, moxabustion, cutting dairy and soy, regular trips to the chiropractor, gas drops and reflux meds. We are doing everything and we have some good days and bad days. It really sucks.

  • I think it's the name of the game for some babies. Just try to be as patient as possible and when you need to put the baby down in a safe place, walk away for a few minutes to gather yourself and go back to it! I rocked, swaddled, baby wore, sung, etc and cried all the time!! It finally got better around 3 months. Now that's not to say it's all gone... It's NOT. But it's become more tolerable and less frequent.
