Flying at 22 weeks

I have an OB appointment in a week so I will obviously ask him about this. But wanted to get an idea of others experiences, if you have flown at that point or were advised against it. I am currently 13wks w/ di/di twins (I think! Forgive my ignorance. I had IVF and there are definitely 2 sacs).

Sorry if this is discussed frequently. The mobile search function is not the best.

Re: Flying at 22 weeks

  • I have mo/di twins and my MFM told me I could fly up to 24 weeks as long as everything was going well. I have a trip at 20/21 weeks and an appt that week before I leave, so I will know everything is good before I travel.

  • I flew at 24 weeks, but did not travel after that. My doctor said no flying after 28 weeks.

  • I flew to Israel for a week when I was 22 or 24 weeks. It wasn't too bad....I got up and walked a lot, and drank TONS of water and apple juice. If your doc says it's ok, and you're feeling strong, I say go for it! Enjoy traveling until you truly can't anymore :)
  • I'm 22 weeks now and I would be fine to fly (assuming my doc gave me the okay).

  • Thanks everyone. I guess I should have also mentioned...I would be alone on a 5-6 hour flight with a 4-year-old. :-/

Crazy? Or not much of a factor?

  • I had to cancel a flight at around 23 weeks due to complications. Everything resettled back down and I was able to fly on a 2 hr flight at 32 weeks. I would recommend getting travel insurance and planning on where you will go while out of town if you start having complications.
  • I flew at 22.5 weeks with the return trip at 24.  Everything turned out fine, but I would be lying if I didn't say I was nervous about it. I also had no complications up to that point and aside from severe morning sickness had a very smooth pregnancy (until my water broke at 34 weeks).

My midwife is super conservative, and asked me not to fly AT ALL. She wanted me to be reasonably close to a hospital at all times, and definitely not in a foreign country where I couldn't speak the language if anything were to happen. I think this view is pretty extreme and not standard though!

This has been my experience too, but with mo/dis with sIUGR, we're playing it extra safe. I would talk about it with your OB for sure.
  • I have di/di and my MFM didn't want me flying past 24 weeks. I flew cross country right around 20 weeks and ha no problems. It was actually easier than when I flew around that time during my first pregnancy.
