Raw Apples

My LO saw the bowl of fresh fruit on the counter and immediately pointed to it so I figure I'd just let him look and touch; well he picked up an apple and started eating it like a champ! I was so shocked, I can't get him to eat a cracker without nearly choking. And he must have liked it because the water works that came after I took it from him were heart breaking!! Is raw apple OK to give? I googled and got mixed answers. He has 4 teeth with 2 more on their way in up top, if that matters. TIA and sorry if this has been asked before or is a silly question!

Re: Raw Apples

  • At our last visit our doctor actually suggested thin slices of apple for LO. I've been too scared to try, but I guess it's ok.

  • Milla eats whole apples all the time. I started letting her in October. She had 6 teeth then. Now she has 10, 2 are molars. See

  • My babies love apple slices! I usually take the skin off, though, b/c they tend to struggle with it.

  • Morgan has been eating apples for months, she loves them!  I get the little packages from McDonalds, 2/$1, and stick them in the diaper bag or my purse when we go out as a quick snack.

  • Yup, it's a staple in our house. We have an apple slicer/corer and an apple spiraler. Both kids love eating apple slinkies.

  • Lydia's been eating raw apple slices for almost 6 months! She doesn't have any teeth, but she mows down on them and leaves all but small pieces of skin - she loves them!

  • We've also been giving him apples for quite some time. MIL just gave him some to when we were introducing solids and he loves them.  He always manages to eat them down to the peel, but he's been eating more peel as of late.

  • She's been getting raw apples for months now, and just got teeth a few weeks ago.  I typically cut off the skin, but she had some diced apples with skin when we were out to lunch yesterday and did fine.  So I guess I'll let her have slices with skin on at home now - less work for me!
  • Another LO who has been having apple slices for a long time now, several months. She loves them.

If apples/choking worry you, try pears. They tend to be much softer.

  • I was scared to try.  DD just got her first two teeth a couple of weeks ago.  Now, I'm going to try the thin slices:)
