Babies: 6 - 9 Months

transitioning to bottle....

Hi ladies! LO is 3.5 months and I'm trying to transition her to a bottle of pumped milk. I've been trying for almost two weeks now.... once or twice a day. She HATES IT. Sometimes she even cries at the sheer sight of the bottle. I've gotten her to the point where she will accept the nipple into her mouth, and she knows there is milk in there, but she just won't suck. I've tried Dr. Brown's, Playtex Nurser, Playtex Vent-Air, and Tommee Tippee. Tommee Tippee seems to be the one I've had the most luck with.... just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or advice on technique?
I try to walk with her, rock her, swaddle, etc....... and I usually try at second feeding of the day, and not when she is starving.....

TIA!

Re: transitioning to bottle....

  • Have someone else do it while you're out of the house. Your LO smells that you're still there so why would they take a bottle?

  • Why would they take a bottle? Gosh, your so right. Do you always reply to posts with an insinuating tone that the person is an idiot?

I'm accepting of advice but please don't include unnecessary back handed questions.
I'm having a really hard time with this, and yes, i've tried to have someone else do it.

    Thank you anyway-

  • Will she take a pacifier? If so, maybe start with that and then quickly switch it out for the bottle. Also, maybe try when she is super sleepy, like her MOTN feeding? Or a faster flow nipple if you have a really strong let down? Im sorry you're struggling - wish I had more ideas. Hopefully she catches on soon, as I'm sure you're dying for a break! :)

WTF her comment wasn't rude at all.

Anyways, it's best to get babies on the bottle before 8 wks. DS never took one either & I tried 3 diff ones. I wasn't about to go try a bunch more. How about a sippy cup? DS took to that right away

I don't think she was trying to be snarky. My guy didn't really take to the bottle until he was forced to because I was working and he had nothing but his grandma and bottles for 7 hours. Try different flow nipples, the milk at different temperatures, feeding baby laying down versus upright... Sometimes our guy would do better if we were sitting outdoors or sitting in a dark quiet room. Seriously also try leaving the house and letting someone else do it. Above all, just keep trying. It is a little late to intro a bottle, but if LO HAS to take it, she will eventually adjust. If you are always around, and she knows she will be ale to nurse, it may not happen.

  • My LO won't take a bottle from me. Get someone else to try, and it might take a while before they give in and drink it.

LO liked the breastflow bottles. Each baby is different.

Good luck, it can be stressful!
