Intro/super dry skin question

Hello everyone! Im a ftm, I gave birth to my son nov 13, five weeks early due to preeclampsia. He spent two weeks in the nicu getting help eating and staying warm. A few days before he came home I started to notice dryness and cracking on his hands- they sent us home with aquaphor which we've continued to use as needed. But yesterday his skin started to peel everywhere but his face, similar looking to after a sun burn. Not just dry or flaky. I bathed him this morning and used ca baby calendula cream this time since the aquaphor isn't working. I hope that helps but I'm wondering if it could be the detergent or an allergy or is this a normal thing? Help!

Re: Intro/super dry skin question

  • I'd ask your pedi about it. Doesn't sound common to me.

  • Ohhhhhh. I would def be calling my pedi. I haven't heard of this.

Are you using dreft or tide free and clear laundry soap? We use the tide and haven't had any issues.

We use baby bee products and love them. He started to get dry skin in the nicu so I brought our wash and lotion in and haven't had any more issues.

I hope its nothing serious. Keep us posted.

  • You know, I have a vague recollection of this happening and I found out it was normal.  But then, I can barely recall it, since those days are a haze, so it doesn't hurt to call.

  • I don't have any experience with this with DD, but it sounds very similar to what was happening with my nephew when they discovered he has eczema. I would definitely call the pedi though, to find out what's going on.

  • I would also call the pedi about this. Have you used anything new with him, soaps, detergents, dryer sheets, lotions, etc?

  • His doctor didn't seemed concerned at all. She said to use cetaphil and to call back if it gets worse. We see her next week though and as long as it doesn't seem to bother him or get red I guess I'm okay with just using moisturizer and hoping it stops soon. It has gotten better but he's still flaky.
  • Hes so new! Everything we've used on him we've only had/tried for a little over a week. I did immediately switch laundry detergent to seventh gen and an extra rinse. I that could be helping too.
  • This happened to my son as well. My pedi told us it was normal and just told us to continue putting lotion on immediately after his baths to lock in the moisture. After 3-4 weeks it resolved and it hasn't been an issue since. We used and continue to use cera ve lotion, a little pricey but worth it! Good luck!
