Baby Names

Ilona

Not pregnant yet, but a while ago I was researching my ancestry and I found out that my great-great-grandmother who immigrated here from Prague was named Ilona (it starts with an "i" if you are having a hard time with the font).

What are your first thoughts on the name (please be completely honest, no sugar-coating), and how do you think you would pronounce it?

Re: Ilona

  • I knew an Illana (or Ilana? I never saw it written) and I like it. I pronounce them similarly, ill-ON-a. I love the family connection you have!

  • My husband and I are considering this name for our soon to be daughter. I read that it is thought to be a Hungarian form of Helen, so we think it's a great way to honor my Hungarian ancestry and his favorite grandmother Helen. I would also pronounce it ill-on-a. It's definitely a different name, but I think it's beautiful and if you like it, you should use it!

  • I would pronounce it ill-OWN-ah.  It's nice.

  • I like it! It's the name of one of my model friends. Thumbs up

  • I would also pronounce it with the long "o" sound, and not like Ilana, which I'd pronounce with an "ah" sound.

FWIW, I love Ilona. It was actually on my list for DD.

  • I guess technically the pronunciation is with the long "o" sound, at least according to https://www.behindthename.com/name/ilona . It also looks like the "i" is pronounced as "ee".  I think you could say it whichever way you like best!
  • I think it's  very nice, especially because of the family connection. My first thought was to also pronounce it with a long "o" and would go with the "ee" sound for the first letter "i".

  • I love Ilona! It used to be on my list, but a lot of posters here shot it down. It's a beautiful Hungarian name, and I pronounce it il-own-ah

  • Thanks everyone! I didn't know if it would be too "out there" or whatever.

When I first saw my family tree, I read it as "ill-oh-na" but when I did some research, it says it should be pronounced "eye-lo-na." But I prefer it how I thought it was. So I just wanted to see if there would be a lot of confusion.

So I guess I will keep it on a potential list if I ever have a girl! Thanks again!
