Safe to be around chemo/radiation patients while pregnant?

I plan to ask my midwife next week, however I was curious if anyone has had experience with this. My DWs uncle is undergoing chemotherapy and radiation and we are planning to spend Christmas at their house (unfortunately we have a feeling it will be his last Christmas). We aren't sure if it is safe for me to be exposed to him...thoughts?

Re: Safe to be around chemo/radiation patients while pregnant?

  • I am an oncology nurse and am still working in my last month of pregnancy.  My advice would be not to use the same bathroom or come in contact with any body fluids (vomit, urine, ect.) of the person receiving chemo.  If you must use the same restroom make sure he flushes twice after urinating (chemo is passed thru the kidneys and can become airborne in some cases).  Otherwise neither cancer or his treatment are contagious.  Happy Holidays!

  • I looked this up a while ago because my stepmom has cancer and someone made a comment about not having their baby around her because of the radiation and I worried that if a baby shouldn't be then I shouldn't be either. I found out that the type of radiation that you would need to stay away from is very rarely used. So that isn't something you need to worry about. I don't know about chemo but it sounds like the previous answer covered that one. Sorry to hear about DW's uncle. Lots of love to your family during this difficult time.
