Double heart beat on a doppler?

Does anyone know if it is possible to pick up an "echo" or something of the sort in your uterus when you use a doppler? I am not sure if I am just hearing all four chambers of the heart pumping at sometimes, if I'm a just hearing an echo, or if there might actually be a second heart beat in there. I have been able to pick up a heart beat from very early on in my pregnancy (9w) and I thought the chugging I was hearing was normal but now I am not entirely sure. This is my first pregnancy and I won't be having an ultrasound until I am 16 weeks. It might just be all in my head but I am starting to think my friend joking about it being twins could be a possibility. I'm only 12 weeks and I can definitely tell I am starting to pop.

Any ideas you gals might have as to the "double chugging" would be greatly appreciated. If I move the doppler slightly to the left or right once I pick up the "double chug" I can clearly hear a single heart beat that is at about 150 average. If taking a video would help let me know...I'll figure out some way to post it.

Thanks ladies!

  • Has your doctor or midwife tried to get the heartbeat on Doppler yet? What did they say?

  • Right behind your belly button and also on the left side of your stomach, are two arteries. On Doppler, they usually register between 100-120bpm. That is most likely what you're hearing.

  • You could be hearing your own as well.  My last pregnancy the doctor was trying to listen and he said, oh wait that's yours.  Sometimes you can hear your abdominal aorta swishing in the background.  It should be quite a bit slower than the baby's.

  • At my last doctor visit the doctor picked up the baby's and mine at the same time. This could be it. The heart beat of the baby should be around 150 ish. Your heartbeat is going to be almost half that.
  • I sometimes pick up both mine and the baby's.  To make sure it's not yours, you can put the hand that's not using the doppler on your pulse.  I have a fairly high resting heart rate sometimes so it often doesn't sound that much slower than the baby's might.

  • If it sounds like a horse galloping, That's all baby. Is that what you mean by double chug? Like a chugga chug, chugga chug... and you hear another sound on top of that?

  • Yes - you can hear your own pulse if you catch the major artery. It's possible to hear the baby and yourself at the same time.
  • Thanks for your input ladies. I know for sure I am not getting my own heart beat mixed in with the baby's. I am sure I am probably just going crazy but it sounds like it's two babies with their heartbeats overlapping. I guess I will find out more in a few weeks. For now I will just be very happy in knowing that I have a baby in there with one strong heartbeat. I'll keep you updated once I see my Dr on Jan 6th.

  • FYI: I was an L&D RN and never caught twins on the same reading.
