Calling baby "it"?

Does anyone refer to the baby as "it"? As in, "It moved yesterday". I feel like it's a bit impersonal and I don't prefer to use it. I've been defaulting to "he", but people have been picking up on that quickly and then I have to go into my spiel that I don't know the sex, I'm not finding out, I just don't like saying "it".
What do you use if you don't know the sex?

We generally call ours Seamus. But I do still say "it" all the time, even though the u/s tech said 80% boy. Still feels weird calling it "he" or "she" for some reason. Seamus!

  • We've slipped into the baaaad habit of calling baby she/her. I try not to and try to remind DH that it could be he/him.... But we both seem really stuck on this baby being a girl without any scientific proof. When not calling the baby her- I tend to default to "the baby" or "pumpkin"

  • I always say "baby" as if its his/her name. Ex "baby moved a lot last night"
    I love saying it :)
  • I typically either say "this baby" if I'm not talking to my boyfriend.  My boyfriend and I have actually nicknamed the baby Flip because on the first Ultrasound he/she was kicking their little foot like crazy and it made me think of a flipper for some reason. Sometimes though my bf will call Flip "He" and I quickly correct him with "She".  (We don't know what we're having yet, but he's all about having a boy and I'd really like a girl b/c there have been no baby girls in either of our families for a very long time.  He has a brother who has 2 nephews, so his mom is really hoping for her baby girl.  Obviously we really don't care either way, but we like to mess with each other and almost be competitive about it like our wills are going to somehow change the sex of the baby. Think Pink!!
  • We call ours Babby. But I catch myself using male pronouns sometimes, I have no idea why.

  • We have this bizarre thing where DH is Stein, I'm Momma Stein, DD is Abbystein, and we refer to this one as mini-Stein. Nowhere in our name is Stein. It just randomly became a thing, but it works for us.

  • I usually just say the baby.  But I do say it sometimes.  Once we know what it is (2 weeks), we will use he or she.

  • I say "baby." It drives me CRAZY when people say "it," just like it drives me crazy when people refer to a dog a an "it."

  • For the most part we say 'the baby' but oddly enough, I refer to it as 'he' and DH refers to it as 'she'. DH wants a boy so bad, but still calls the baby 'her', it's like he's hedging his bets already.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
  • At first I was calling it the parasite, but that wasn't very nice. Now we call it "peanut" "the baby" "it" whatever comes to mind. I have been saying "he" but that just slips out.

  • I go with Spawn or the bean... Spawn drives my mom particularity batty ;;)
  • We called it "it" before we knew it was a boy. But that did feel impersonal, so we started calling it "Lemon". Because we have 2 top-choice names but we aren't picking one for sure until we meet him in May (to make sure he looks like his name) we still call him Lemon. Or he/him.

Sometimes I still say "it" by accident. I often call him "baby" as well, because the Lemon thing is kind of a cute thing my husband and I made up for ourselves.

  • I try not to say it, but I do it all the time. My husband says he constantly just because he wants a boy, I guess. I saw "the baby". At least I try to.
  • We call our Skeletor and have since 13 weeks before that it was gummy bear baby.
  • We called our first one Turtle from the start. we had a boy but he didn't get named until he was about 9 hours old. Haven't called him Turtle since he was born but it was our code name prior to telling anyone.
  • I've said "it" a bunch of times too and kind of feel bad about it when I say it, but I don't want to use he/she and sometimes "baby" just doesn't fit into the sentence.
  • Still calling the baby "it" with the occasional lapse of "he" even though we won't know until next week.  Then again, I still haven't told very many people so it doesn't come up in conversation much. With DH, it is normally "your kid" and "they."

  • We started off saying "Baby Krueger" but it got old. Then DH suggested we name our baby Rufus... ESPECIALLY if we have a girl. His comment received  a "Hahaha! ... No." But we use it as some of a fetus nickname. "Baby Rufus"... We get a lot of side eyes, but it makes me chuckle, and being pregnant is hard so I need as many of those as I can get.
  • We call the baby "it" till we find out the sex. The baby doesn't know or care, and I love it just as much now as I will in 2.5 weeks when we find out whether we're having a he or a she.

    Pronouns =/= love.

  • I try to say "baby" or "they/them"... sometimes I say "it" but it just sounds funny to me. DH fondly refers to LO as spud because he though the first U/S looked like I was baking a potato. ;)

  • I say he because my mother tongue is French and there's no gender neutral pronoun, he is the default, so I'm just used to saying he. DH, however, has been referring to LO as she.

  • We call our baby "TeenySloth" because sloths are kind of a thing with my family (long story). But I have said "it" and also switch between using male and female pronouns without even noticing.

  • I use either baby or the beast because this baby got me so sick haha
  • We were alternating between "it", "he", and "she".  Or "the baby", or "Baby LN".  Now that we know the sex, we use "he", though we might still use "the baby", "baby LN", "our son" (when talking to each other; I think we're just trying to get used to that word!), or our current front runner FN.
