Success after IF

Long term effects from Lupron trigger?

Hi all!  I am actually from the infertility page....though still pretty new there.  But I had a question that I thought might be better asked to those that have fertility treatments behind them.  I am starting my next IVF cycle and my RE has recommended that I use a lupron trigger due to having had OHSS after my first ER.  I know there are risks with all the meds and I get that, but there seems to be A LOT of controversy about lupron and long term effects.  I also know I should be careful what I read on the internet, but I can't seem to shake my concerns with this medication.  Had anyone taken the lupron trigger in their past IF treatments and can tell me if they had any long terms issues?  Thanks!

Re: Long term effects from Lupron trigger?

  • Hi! I'm not sure I will be much help as I did not do IVF, but on my 4th IUI trying for my first, I had so many follies that they switched my trigger to Lupron. It was only 1mg and it was only 2 years ago, but I haven't experienced anything unusual. What do they say the long term effects might be?

    Good luck with IVF #2!

@mdiblasi10 Thanks for the response.  There are a variety of different long term effects that are mentioned but the most common seem to be joint pain and memory loss.  And from what I have seen they all say it was effects they had when they took it that never went away.  I know I shouldn't put too much into what I see on the internet, people seldom go on there to say nothing happened, only when it's bad.  It just seemed to be a little more dramatic this time.

BTW....LOVE your sons name....that is what we would name a boy if we were to have one :)

  • I had Lupron during my IVF cycle and, although I'm not sure how soon what you're reading says the long-term effects kick in, I've had no negative side effects from it.

Google is your worst enemy during IF! Definitely talk to your RE about your concerns, and do what feels best. But Lupron did help me (any many other ladies) get my take-home baby.
MF (low motility) - Began stims for IVF#1 7/21/12
    ER 8/2/12 - 14 eggs retrieved, 12 mature and ICSI'd, 6 fertilized. ET 8/7 - 2 embies. Beta#1 8/17: 143! Beta#2 8/20: 590! Beta#3 8/22: 1,162! 1st US 9/4: one beautiful little bean with the best sounding HB I've ever heard!

  • I was on Lupron for two IVF cycles and one of my cancelled FET cycles. I took it every day as part of the cycles. The dose you are on for IF purposes is a ton smaller than the dose you would be on to treat cancer. I think the s/e you are reading about apply to a much higher dose than what you would have. No long term effects here. GL!
