soy formula?

Anyone feed their LO soy formula?  My DD is currently on Nutramigen due to a suspected milk protein allergy.  She HATES it!  I posted in another thread the horrible feeding issues I have with her.   I have an appt. with a gastric doc in a few weeks, and was trying to hold off changing things, but I am getting desperate.   Several of my friends swear by soy formula.  My pedi just blows me off when I mention it and talks about Neocate as our next option, which is SUPER expensive.  Obviously, I will do whatever I can to get her to eat and gain weight, but I am debating trying soy.  Has anyone had good luck with it?   I feel at this point I have nothing to lose, as she is miserable and in pain already.   Any thoughts?

Re: soy formula?

  • Our GI thought our baby was MSPI too. I exclusively pump, so I went on an elimination diet. I was miserable, and we didn't see improvement with her. I quit the diet and she started improving. She eats much more now - I have to supplement with formula. She takes Gentlease and does great with it. I just watched for signs of uncomfortableness when we did the diet change/ formula.

  • Due to a disorder we feed our LO a combination of soy formula and breast milk. We used to supplement with just regular formula and BM which he liked but was SO gassy with. He doesn't seem to mind the soy at all and is SO much more comfy (less gassy, better poo's) =)

  • I am exclusively pumping for this baby. But with DD1, Dr. suspected milk protein allergy because she always seemed to be in pain (cried at the bottle, didn't sleep well, spit up a lot). We did Nutramigen and she hated it. We also tried soy, which she seemed to like the taste of. But unfortunately she became extremely constipated and had terrible gas from it. She then went on the presciption one Elecare (which tastes even worse than the Nutramigen).

I'm sorry you're going through this. I know how hard it is.
  • It depends on whether your LO is also allergic to soy.  If he/she is then it won't help.  My son is only allergic to milk and tolerates soy formula (Similac Isomil) well.  He's BF'd but get a bottle of formula 1-2 times a day during the week.  I know some people don't like soy formula but my siblings and I all had to use it when we were little and none of us have any problems as a result of it.  I don' t know if it would cause constipation because we don't use it as his only source of food.

You could try an ounce or two at a time and see how well your LO tolerates it.  I don't know about your LO, but DS would immediately throw up any milk-based formula so it didn't take long to figure out if he could tolerate one.
  • We are on similac soy. Love it. Noticed a huge difference from the first bottle.
  • Well I started her on soy (Similac Isomil) and she is like a different baby! She is soo much happier and actually has been drinking 4-5 oz bottles with little to no fighting. Her stool has been pretty hard and she isn't going that often, so that worries me a little. How long before I can consider this a success? It's been 4 days.
  • We had the same issue. Our ped put lil man on miralax for a bit until his tummy was all lined out. Half a teaspoon. We are off the miralax now and he is a pooping champ :) Maybe see what your ped says about that?? We tried everything in the book from prunes, pears, apple juice prune juice, warm bath, tummy rub, bicycle. You name it. We had tried breastfeeding, nutrimagen, gentlease, similac sensitive, atleast 1 more until I finally put him on soy. The doctor argued at first but they aren't with your baby all day so sometimes mommas just know best. Your doing a great job and it will get btr :) don't forget to sign up at similac.com for their freebies and get all the $5 coupons. I use those at SAMs to buy the big containers, with the coupon you spend the same amount you would for the small container.
  • Per peds, after trying 3 different formulas for 2 weeks each time with no improvement, we switched DS to Isomil per recommendation from peds, and he's been great on it! Before he was gassy and crying all the time. You could tell his tummy was bothering him. Not anymore!
