Sonia or Sonja

Our last name is Scandinavian with a "j" that sounds like a "y"

So would you stick with the Scandinavian spelling of Sonja and have two silent J's or go with Sonia to make it less matchy?

That's how I'm leaning too, but I was curious if it would seem odd to not use the scan. Spelling when our LN is so obviously scan.

  • I wouldn't consider it matchy if thats how your culture uses that letter for that sound. But for me cultural roots trumps flow.

I am guessing, that unless you live in an area with a large Scandinavian contingency, no one will notice.  Pretty name, BTW.

I don't think too many would notice, and it actually started as a joke! I said that we couldn't possibly use Sonja bc it would just be too cruel, but I actually really like it spelled either way.
  • Beautiful and refreshing name.  I would spell it Sonja.

  • My sister-in-law is Sonja....my DH emphasizes the JA part to tease her (cause sometimes he acts like he's 5). I think spelling it Sonia would be less complicated.

Yeah, our LN is long and confusing enough as it is, so I'm leaning towards simplicity for the FN.
  • I love Sonja.  Personally, I prefer the j spelling, especially since you have a Scandinavian last name.  But, the "i" spelling is nice too, especially if you want something simpler with a complicated last name.

  • What a great, underused name!  I voted Sonia just so it wasn't as matchy.
