Baby Names

Name to Consider: Darby

So it's actually my cat's name but I think it could be sort of adorable on a little girl...who could grow into a responsible lawyer or politician.  It's sort of non-traditional or faux (but not really) British Isles-y. The only problem I've had is a rather rude British woman noted that it was a "really nasty part of Britain."

It seems like it's historically been more common on boys than girls but has all the makings of a nice girls name. Also, tons of really fun nicknames (that, again, I use for my cat so who knows if they'd transfer well to a real, live human)

Cute spin on Darcy or a name to leave to the dogs (&cats)?

Re: Name to Consider: Darby

  • We have a Darbie that's a reg on this board.  I don't think that's her actual name, but that is who I thought of first!

I think it could be cute on the right little girl.

  • I've just known one Darby...who was a dentist. It seemed a little cutesy on her but maybe that was more her and less her name.

It's so interesting to me how these sort of boards really develop personalities when it comes to preferences & style.

  • @joy2611 Darcy seems way feminine to me while I definitely waver on Darby. I'm mobile so I don't have the ss stats in front of me but for Darby in the last 20 years it's only made the top 1000 for girls.

I think it's likely different in the UK where it's been historically a 'real' name.
  • I think the woman was probably talking about Derby, which is pronounced Darby and is an industrial centre in the UK.

As a first name, I'm not a big fan of it on either boys or girls.

  • I knew the most beautiful little girl named Darby, her brother was Padraig...I had a crush on both their names. Historically though, Darby is a boy's name.

  • It's my dogs name so I tend to think of it as pet name as well!

  • I actually really, really like Darby.  I don't think I'd ever use it, just because I feel like it would be too ballsy of a choice for us...but I do think it's a great name.
