Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Eating less / bottle strike?

My LO just all of a sudden started eating 4.5oz in the morning (down from 6 or more oz) for her first bottle. Sometimes she doesn't finish her other bottles during the day either. However she has started making up for it in the MOTN. (Yay). Is this normal to just all of a sudden stop eating as much? She is 7.5 months, just got her first tooth a week ago, and just learned to get up on all fours and rock (so ya, not much sleeping going on around here anyway!). She gets solids 2x a day, and I've cut back the amount she gets since she hasn't been finishing bottles because i was afraid she was filling up. Should I be worried or call the ped?

Re: Eating less / bottle strike?

  • I wouldn't be worried.  My DD did this too.  The pedi said absolutely no more MOTN bottles.  At this age they should be able to sleep through the night without eating (they may still wake up and you should tend to them, but they don't need to eat, and feeding them at night just enforces this behavior).  So we stopped the MOTN feeds and she stopped waking up for them. It was easy but then DD is super easy going, so I wish you good luck with yours!

  • My daughter did this a couple of weeks ago - would not take an entire bottle for about 3 days.  She would take 4-5 ounces of an 8 ounce bottle, and then turn her head away.  Shortly after that, she started throwing up, and it turns out she had a stomach bug.  Once she cleared that up, she was back to taking her full bottles.  Just something to consider...
