Cloth Diapering

CDing a second baby

I'm having some serious hate for my CD's.  My stash was used for DD and now that I'm using them on DS, they suck.  I'm having major leak issues, mostly in the rise.  He is a belly sleeper and sometimes they leak over the top, but I can deal with that.  I'm thinking the elastics have loosened up and now there are gaps.  I hang dry my covers 99% of the time and use a variety of brands so it's not just one brand that crapped out (though Grovia was the worst).  I guess this is more of a rant than anything, but since I'm posting - any suggestions on how to help me love my dipes again (aside from getting elastics replaced)?

  • Buy more diapers!

That totally sucks. It's possible that you could at least sell off what you have, and buy new (at least new to you). Your diapers could be worn now, but the same diapers may be fine and just not the right diapers for your DS.

You said covers, but what type(s) of diapers do you have?

  • How often are you changing? Are they soaked when you change? What is your wash routine? Type of detergent? How did you store them between kids? Do you see leg gaps when you fasten the diaper?

It says she's 4 week overdue on her ticker. So... newborn.

  • Hmm. Then that is likely the problem. Wonder if she will return and answer questions?

I am mobile and missed the ticker too. Curious if she will return too. She did say it was a rant before asking if we had suggestions.

  • Sorry, have tried to update ticker but TB wouldn't let me. Babe is 5 1/2 months old.  He's over 15lbs, so plenty big for O/S.  First chance I had to return and check responses, did not mean to post and run.  Diapers weren't stored between kids because DD only potty trained recently.

I have BG 4.0's, Charlie Banana's (these are brand spanking new and leak the least), Itti-Bitti TuTu's and one D'lish, still using some prefolds with a variety of covers, a couple Alva's (also brand new.  The minky is huge and really doesn't fit him yet), a Thirsties Duo, and I think that's it that I'm able to use right now.  As I said in OP, all of my Grovia's lost complete elasticity.  They were my fav with DD and got a lot of love, so it is what it is.  I have a couple of Fuzzibunz that need new elastics and a Happy Heiny that I never really liked anyway.  Also some others that aren't O/S and are bigger so he hasn't worn them yet.

@Danie007 - I could try selling what I have but I live in a small community in a remote location so it may not work in my favour.  Then I'm stuck with having to trial a new stash.  If I could find a brand that worked really well for him, then yes, I could post the others for sale.

I change him frequently, before and after naps and then as needed.  It's rare to go longer than 1.5 hours without a change when we're at home.

Yes, there are gaps at the leg, even on the lowest rise.

Wash routine (I have a F/L):  Cold quick wash, no soap, no spin.  Then 2TBPS of Rock 'n' Green, warm wash (as recc. by the folks at Grovia when I inquired about my dipes. I used to use hot water) and an extra rinse. Covers are hung to dry.

I think that's all of your questions answered.  I don't have bump on mobile and when kids wake up I'm not on the computer long enough to type out responses.  I'm not ignoring you, just busy.

  • Your wash routine may need tweaking. Lately more and more people are having problems with Rocking Green. My next question is are the inserts actually soaked or even really damp? You may have repelling issues. If that is the case I would do a hot water strip and switch detergents. 2tbsp may be too much detergent for your wash.

I've noticed that some manufacturer's are no longer recommending Rock n Green as well.  I have a couple of laundry tarts samples here I can try.  Inserts are usually pretty wet.  I used some RLR a couple of months ago for a strip, but could try again.  I've used less detergent in the past and diapers were coming out of the wash still smelling funky.  It wouldn't hurt to try and find a happy medium though.  Thanks for your suggestions.

  • I agree with @Danie007 that you might want to try a hot water strip. That breathed so much new life back into my diapers a month or so ago. Also, I wonder if it would help to replace your inserts. If they've been through your kid and were used to begin with, they may just be ready to retire. Also, you may want to flip them inside out so you can see the PUL. I bought some used BGs before I knew what to look for, and there were all kinds of tiny cracks in the PUL. They leaked like crazy.

How did you strip your diapers?  A friend of mine had recommended the RLR.  I will check the PUL, I've seen it deteriorate on some older diapers.  I put a bamboo insert in the BG yesterday to see if that helped but the little rascal pooped within minutes of being changed, so it wasn't on long enough to tell.

  • Did catch that part on OP's reply. I was going off the wash routine she posted. If there are gaps you are going to have leaks. However, she is still having leaking issues with her new CBs too. Do these gap too @kjgilhoo?

Nope, CB's are a gap-less @Danie007.  I spoke with a friend today who switched to Laundry Tarts detergent (it's Canadian, not sure if it's sold in the U.S.) so I'm going to do a hot water strip and try that one out and see if there are improvements.  I used a bamboo insert with one of the BG's today and it didn't leak, so that's a plus.  I checked the PUL on that one too and it's fine. The other's are dirty, so didn't check those.

I'm thinking it's the fit for the most part and will come down to elastics or diapers needing to be replaced.  My MIL is visiting in January and is handy with a sewing machine so I might put her to work if she's willing.

    Thanks for everyone's replies!
