Prenatals

Hello everyone! I'm 11w and I think my prenatal vitamins are what's making me so sick! I stopped taking them for a few days and I felt great.. But then I started taking them again ( just want the baby to be healthy) and I feel horrible. I take them before bed hoping that would make it better but nope! Any suggestions ? Anyone not taking prenatals ?

Re: Prenatals

  • For me it was the iron that was making me so sick and constipated. I took a children's chewable for several days then moved to the prenatal gummies. Check the nutrition facts of the gummies, mine do not have iron so I make sure to get plenty of iron in my diet.

  • My OB and when I worked in perinates/antepartum, we would recommend taking two Flinstones chewables if the PNV was making you sick :)
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Maybe try a liquid.  For sure try a different brand.  Sounds like your current one just doesn't agree with you.
  • I take Synergy Organics. Super gentle on my stomach, and don't make me sick.
  • Thank you all! I'm definitely going to try something different!
  • I really like the Rainbow Lite ones - easy on the stomach. Now I have an rx for Prenate Minis. I've already hit my deductible for the year so they're free . . . can't beat that . . . and they are small and easy to swallow and don't upset my system at all when taken before bed.
  • Take them right before you go to bed. Literally, then hopefully you can be asleep before they start to kick in.
  • I take the target brand (up & up) gummy prenatals. I showed them to my ob and she said they contained everything pregnant women need. They are delicious and I look forward to having them every morning. I've never felt sick from them
  • My doctor told me I could stop taking them after 8 weeks (I had terrible morning sickness and he thought they were contributing and said the folic acid wasn't really necessary anymore at that point).  He told me I didn't have to take them again until 20 weeks.  I've been taking a calcium/fiber chewable though to help with the poooping.

Take them at night before you go to bed. I do this and I've had zero problems

  • I was getting sick too... Switched to Nexa plus and I love them! It is one capsule a day with 1000 mcg of folic acid as well as DHA. They smell and taste like vanilla. Ask your doc!
  • I took OTC prenatals before getting pregnant and during my early pregnancy. At my first doctor's appointment he said that I should stop taking them and just take 5mg (a LOT) of folic acid. He said that all the nutrients that the baby needs are already in my body and the baby will take what it needs from me.

The reason he gave to stop taking them is that they often cause constipation and other bad things for the mom while contributing very little to the baby. Anyway, sort of freaked me out a bit at the beginning but he's a very well known doctor and I follow his logic.

Anyway, I presume that I will start taking them again when I get into second tri in a week or two.
  • I take New Chapter prenatals and DHA. Gentle and have prebiotics/probiotics.

@aesimpI'm so glad to hear that! After reading through this I started to get really nervous about having stopped them - even though it was at my doctor's instruction! He's the chairman of the OB department at his hospital and extremely well known, 1 of 3 named best OB in Baltimore two years ago, etc... So I did trust him.  But, still, it's good to hear someone else received the same guidance!

It really seemed even based on my own research that folic acid is all you need, along with iron potentially if you are or become anemic (which was not a problem for me).

    Edited for typos.
  • I take the Nature Made ones at night. I feel ok on them!
  • I wasn't taking them cuz they made me sick too. But now that I'm out of the first tri I'm taking them again and I have to take mine with oatmeal or some sort of heavier breakfast or they upset my stomach.
